The Pekin lies at the center of what was once a thriving Chinese district in Butte. Most of the neighborhood is long gone, but the Pekin with its steep staircase, funky painted booths, and circa 1970 bar remains. This place is classic. Like much of Butte it is living history and well worth the visit. Ok the food is below par, but the setting is not too be missed.

Pretty good, considering. Having grown up in Montana, I learned to be leary of ethnic food in towns with only one chinese restaurant (I grew up in one). Butte currently only has four. Not having enough palates in town who enjoy subtle flavors or multiple experiences is a problem. So the food leans toward bland. That said…We had the curry chicken and the ginger shrimp. The curry was a little more hot than flavorful but the ginger shrimp as good as I would make myself (well, I would put more ginger into the stir fry). Vegetables were fresh and not over cooked. My only complaint would be that the variety of veggies were less than I expected. Lots of peppers and onions. All in all, not a culinary experience. But a solid meal for americanized ethnic food.
Outsider. Only go here if you were born in Butte and have never set foot outside of it. Everybody from Butte raved about the food but I happen to be from out of town and have a different measuring stick for Chinese food. I have had better food at the mall Chinese outfit. The morale of the story is if you are from Butte knock yourself out you will love it…. everyone else don’t waste your time because you won’t want to eat your meal. What Chinese food has sliced deli chicken meet chopped up in it?
Authentic And the best in the world! Authentic in taste and appearance! Danny Wong does it right
The Real Deal. The Pekin simply is one of a kind. If the place charged you five bucks just to look around, it’d be worth the investment. Short of a strange and rickety staircase leading up frm a Stockton Street alley in San Francisco, you will not find another comparable turn-of-the century feeling Chinese eatery in the West.I’m not big on atmosphere, the food has to deliver as well. The Pekin doesn’t feature a lot of the common (and unauthentic) standards of American Chinese (General Tso’s Chicken, Mongolian Beef, etc.) What it does feature are the best house special fried rice, sweet and sour dishes, and barbequed pork you will find. Anywhere.
Always stop there when I come home. Great food never had a bad meal in 31 years so that says sonething.
