When considering all things chicken, anything on the menu that says chicken is fair game. One restaurant chain in Lincoln, Nebraska, thats been around for over 50 years calls itself Runza. This restaurant has built its reputation on their Runza sandwich, a beef, onion and cabbage mix baked into a bun. About 10 years ago (or so), Runza corporate launched Braeda (pronounced BRAY-da), an upscale order at the counter, come get it when your buzzer sounds kind of place. Some have worked well, others still need some TLC when it comes to customer care.I tend to frequent the 33rd and Pioneer Breada every other week or so since my wife works close and I occassionally have lunchtime off. They actually have many chicken options that are rather tasty. Are they free-range? Uh, I dont think so, at least not that its advertised in any way. Todays fare included a chicken salad sandwich and a southwest chicken tortilla soup for me and a rustic bruschetta chicken sandwich for my wife.Beware! The chicken salad contains nuts. But, that and celery are what adds a nice crunch to the creaminess of the rest of the salad. This chicken salad rivals some of the best chicken salad Ive had anywhere.Caution! The chicken tortilla soup bites with some truly flavorful peppers. Finally, someone in Lincoln isnt afraid to put some heat in something.Braeda adds crunchy tortilla chips and a dollop of sour cream to round out the creamy heat of the soup. The only real problem is that they give you a slice of focaccia bread on the sideincongruous at best. I think tortilla chips instead would knock this out of the park! Finally, my wife loves the rustic bruschetta chicken sandwich. In addition to the chicken, Braeda adds fresh tomatoes, Monterey Jack cheese, basil and balsamic vinaigrette to give it a nice Italian taste. Bellissimo! So what about the WOW factor? And what is a WOW factor? The WOW factor embodies everything about a place creating an extraordinary experience (think Grand Canyon) . Restaurants rarely reach the nirvana of WOW, but this Breada does a decent job. Service, food and cleanliness work together here to bring satisfaction to even the most discriminating patron.
Four Words–. –Miller and Paine Combo. Order the mac and cheese by itself, and it is way too much food. Order it in a smaller size with the unforgettable cinnamon rolls, and it is manna. The Tazo iced tea is much appreciated. My only wish is that Lincoln would get over Pepsi and sell Coke (preferably Mexican Coke made with cane sugar) in some of their restaurants.
Good food. We really enjoyed Braeda’s- two of us had their soup of the day and they were both really good. Good atmosphere and good food.
Mediocre Panera. This restaurant is like a mediocre Panera. My food was dry and cold. I could have made a better sandwich at home. The only good part was the Runza french fries, but if I’m going to eat french fries, I might as well get a burger.
Good food, reasonably priced and the service was friendly. Enjoy the French Dip sandwich.
Go to owners instead. Braeda is a lot of cost for a lot of nothing.
