Wonderful night out. My wife and I tried Flatiron for the first last evening. We traditionally don’t go out on actual holidays (i.e. Valentine’s Day) but will treat ourselves to a nice dinner a day or two before or after and then spend a quiet evening at home on the day of the holiday. This was just such an occasion. We went on a Wednesday night and there were only a handful of tables taken. We were greeted at the door and our jackets taken (a nice little touch). We were seated, my wife’s chair pulled out for her (before i could do it!) and her napkin placed on her lap. Such a classy but not overdone appearance to the place. The service was excellent. Water topped off frequently. Bread plate replaced with a fresh one.We had the Grilled Artichoke Pierogi in a Black Pepper and Lemon Beurre Blanc with Tomato Concasse for an appetizer. It was wonderful. Layered flavors, great texture. Much more complex than your average Pierogi. Then we had our salads. If I had any complaint about the entire experience it would be the salad. There was a 3.50 upcharge for my wife’s Caesar and it really was not worth it. My house salad, however was fantastic. For entrees, my wife had the Poached Lobster with a Crab Meat and Truffle Oil Risotto, and Roasted Cauliflower and I had the Tournedos of Beef in a Brandy and Cracked Black Pepper Sauce accompanied by Parmesan Potatoes Gratin. Just like the appetizer, these dishes really were prepared well and the flavors layered so well that we took our time and enjoyed our meal. My wife said the risotto, the bane of many an unaccomplished chef, was spot on. The steak was excellently prepared and the brandy peppercorn sauce was one of the best I’ve had in Omaha. We went with a Crme brle for dessert that was excellent. The dinner, on a Wednesday when they were not busy, took about two hours. While that may be slow for some, it was perfectly paced for a special night out. We weren’t rushed but also didn’t feel like we were waiting too long in between courses. Correct spacing between courses is somewhat of a lost art. Flatiron hit it on the nose.
Downhill from prior years. The waitier was annoying, the martini served with no garnish, 10 minutes to get a few olives rolling around on a plate – I guess we were supposed to pick them up and drop them one by one in our drink. All of the food was lacking in flavor. The Caesar salad was pathetic – a small amount of pale hearts of romaine with a half burned have raw slice of bacon and no anchovies….for a $3 up charge over the house salad – don’t bother! The lobster was so overcooked, we couldn’t even get it out of the shell with a steak knife! All in all, not even close to worth the $60 per person. That’s my last visit.
Disappointing. Steak and fish were both overcooked. Manager was inattentive. Quality of ingredients was dwarfed by the price. Server was nice, however. There are many far better (and often times cheaper) places to eat in Omaha.
Very good – even if you have to pay for your own meal. This is a classic expense account joint. Been 3 times; last tie was on my own dime. Even though it was expensive, I felt like it was worth it.Risotto was as good as any I have had anywhere. Lobster was good. Wife’s steak was cooked to near perfection. Potato crusted scallop app w/caviar was nice balance of crunchy-silky-savory-saucy excellence.Service was good, with nice consideration of timing between all courses.Menu here is always good, and the wine list is top notch, and only slightly overpriced. A tip from previous visits: don’t let the staff suggests a wine, or ‘build an appetizer’ without asking the price. Unless the aforementioned expense account is in full effect.
Used to be favorite place in Omaha but chef left and food disappointing. Had table of 15 guests last night. Nearly everyone’s steak and fish were way over cooked.
This restaurant just made it into my top three, which also includes Brother Sebastian’s and the 801 Chophouse, so it is ranking with pretty big contenders. The Flatiron Cafe is absolutely amazing. I have been waiting to try this gem for years now and took my significant other there for valentines day. We could not have picked a better place. The food was stellar (I had the Filet Oscar) and they have one of the better wine lists I have seen here in Omaha. This place is small and very romantic. Guys, take your lady here, you will not regret it. Pricey? Yes. Worth it? Every cent.
Service So-So. Expectations were high. First impressions – not good. Very busy and noisy – too small of a place to accommodate private parties. They had set up a two part screen that did little to deflect the noise. It’s almost all glass windows and high ceilings, so there is nothing to deflect the sound. Once you step into the restaurant, there is no vestibule. The bar is on the right and a dining table (with diners) on the left. The hostess seated us but didn’t give us menus. We had 3-4 different servers throughout the meal itself. They were out of lobster and butternut squash raviolis at 6 PM on a Saturday night. The Cesar salad came with a whole strip of bacon on top – kind of tough to cut without flinging the rest of the salad off the plate. Salad itself was average. Had to flag down a server for a wine refill although my husband’s water glass was topped off frequently!! The Filet Oscar was delicious, but the king crab on top was no more than a generous bite. We were pleasantly surprised at the generous size of the steak. Good thing we like our steaks medium rare, because no one asked us, but that’s how it was served. The desserts were good, although the pumpkin cheesecake portion was tiny. Service not up to par. The food overall met expectations. For the price, would expect both to be great.
