Close to home. Living in the Old Market, I found it odd that my wife and I had never visited V. Mertz together, so we decided to rectify that oversight. Simply said, we were very impressed. Started with a cheese plate and meat plate, followed by a Caeser salad for myself. These starters were great! For entree, I tried the peppercorn steak and Becky had a glazed porkchop; and though the meats themselves were amazing, I was most appreciative of the care taken in preparing and cooking the vegetables. So often, the entree meat completely dominates the dish, but in this instance I would’ve have been perfectly satisfied with a plate of their potatoes, carrots, and broccoli (and trust me, I am not a vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination). To finish off, my wife enjoyed a nouveau chocolate cake and I had the classic creme brulee; we were each very happy with our choices! Yes, it is pricey, but in my opinion very worth the cost. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, the bar service prior to being seated was relaxed, but sophisticated. Truly, an experience to remember with my sweet babu.
Top Notch; A Special Restaurant. V. Mertz has been our special occasion restaurant for some time. The food is absolutely delicious and the service is outstanding. The menu changes and we are always pleasantly surprised with the tasty seasonal offerings. The wine by the glass is the best. The setting and interior are both fun. We always reccommend V. Mertz to out of towner: the best of Omaha.
Great food in a great location. My boyfriend and I tried V Mertz for the first time on a recent trip to Omaha. We loved the location and the atmosphere. Its very cozy and romantic. The service was excellent courteous, professional, efficient, but not intrusive. The food is what really stands out here. We started with the shrimp and grits appetizer, which was delicious. The shrimp were cooked and seasoned perfectly and the grits were smooth and creamy. I ordered the Wagyu flank steak entre, cooked medium rare. Wow! The steak came sliced on a bed of polenta, shitake mushrooms, and asparagus. It was cooked perfectly and the mix of all those flavors was fantastic. My boyfriend had the salmon and said it was the best salmon dish he has ever had in a restaurant. For dessert we shared the crme brulee which was also perfect.I highly recommend V Mertz and would definitely dine there again in the future.
My wife Dollface and I love V Mertz. After multiple visits we’ve never been disappointed. If you’re a regular customer they remember your favorite table, your special days, and your favorite server (ours is Christopher) and sometimes have a special bottle held for you or a specific recommendation for you. We’ve dined in great restaurants from Coast to coast and V Mertz remains a favorite.
Good, reaching to be Great. There is much to like about V. Mertz. The atmosphere is as romantic as all get out. A partition of glass shelving and a wall designed for wine storage separate the stone floor and the low, darkened ceiling. Starched white table cloths and black napkins grace the small tables. This place oozes ambiance. Located in the Old Market Passageway, it just might be Nebraska’s most photographed restaurant. The level of service offered befits a place of this stature. Professional, knowledgable, and unassuming. They seem to anticipate your every need or request before you have the chance to verbalize it.The wine list is surprisingly reasonable, with good wines by the glass priced at less than $10. Good bottles start at under $30. The wait staff is happy to suggest wine pairings for your meal. The compact menu changes daily, and contains many locally sourced, seasonal options. Appetizers, salads and soups each hover around $10, and main courses run the gamut, starting in the 20s and going up from there. So far, so good. But how was our meal?We really enjoyed our cheese plate, as well as our appetizers of pea soup and seared salmon bites served with mellon and shaved celery. The warm rye bread rolls were also full of flavor. My husband enjoyed his rare beef brisket and wagyu beef, served brochette style, with a mix of cornbread and ratatouille.Unfortunately my halibut steak was dry and flavorless. It wasn’t so much overcooked as it was under seasoned. With the rest of the meal flowing so well, it was a major disappointment. I’ve had better fish from Long John Silvers, to be quite blunt.Like a baseball player who has hit a home run, then neglected to tag home plate, V. Mertz had a great game, but stumbled at the finish line. Oh, the possibilities!Food: B+Atmosphere: AService: AMenu Sophistication: A-Value: B
