V Mertz is not what it used to be. The once daily handwritten menu is now boring and littered with meat/farm brand names. I had the peppercorn steak…this used to be one of my favorites. I don’t want some runny, unflavored clear sauce on my steak, I asked the waitress if the sauce still had cream in it and she couldn’t tell me if it was a true steak au poivre. A fair test of a restaurant is how well they can prepare steak and sauce. If I can cook better food at home why would I ever spend three times as much at a restaurant for something that is subpar. I don’t know what they think brandy peppercorn sauce should be, but they might want to go dig up the old recipes the restaurants founding mothers and fathers were using. Since the change of their ownership I have watched a steady decline in taste and presentation of their food. Once, you could walk in in the afternoon and get amazing beef stroganoff, a dish that would make a person cry and plead for seconds. Once, one would have a hard time deciding which entre to get because they all sounded tantalizing. Now I’m hard-pressed to find one that strikes my fancy. Pea fluff on a spoon and froufrou designs on my plate are not working for me. I wanted to go down into their sexy, elegant, brick floored, flower laiden, starched, candlelit basement space and drink some fantastic wine and cocktails, and eat delicious food that wasn’t filled with branding and attempted impress. Restaurant food should stand on its own. Just state what the dish is in the title of the dish, I want to know what I’m eating and what it’s going to taste like and what you put in it under a terse yet descriptive title. And don’t mess with classics. Nothing says delicious peppercorn sauce like heavy cream, briny green peppercorns, really good brandy. For the sake of what once was, please, get it together V Mertz.

I thought their food was great. My boyfriend and I enjoyed everything that was served. The only disappointment was our waiter. He was some French guy who treated us like we were idiots for not knowing how to pronounce the entrees and it took 15 minutes for him to ask us what we wanted to drink. Then, we ordered a cheese platter for our appetizer and since they ran out of the cheese we wanted he put another one on there and was gonna charge us for something we didn’t even like. The other staff was nice but he was rude. You know your service sucks when the people you’re serving ask other servers to help you.
