The Real Deal. Dickey’s is a large Texas based barbeque chain. While I’m not much a fan of chain dining places, I make an exception with this one. This east side barbeque purveyor, just off South Locust, features a large, attractively decorated dining room, filled with bric-a-brac. Customers order from the extensive menu up at the counter, pay, and either receive your food right away, or it will be brought to your table in just a invite or two. This works great for those with limited time to dine. There is a self service drink counter, which also offers up three large tureens of heated sauces: original, sweet, and spicy. I really like barbeque sauces when they are served heated up, as a higher temperature greatly improves the flavor. Each day there is a different daily special. On Mondays the special is a pulled pork sandwich with a large drink and a choice of any two side dishes for under $10 with tax. The pork sandwich was excellent, with the meat perfectly smoked, having just a bit of char and the slightest crunch. I have had barbeque all over America, and Dickey’s holds its own in terms of quality and price.I chose the fried okra and the creamy potato salad for my two sides. They were both just okay. The okra was a bit too salty tasting for my preferences, and the potato salad was not quite what I had hoped it would be, taste wise. But I still ate them all.If Grand Island has better barbeque than Dickey’s I’m not aware of it. This is a nice addition to the local restaurant scene.
Not really a BBQ ‘pit’, no pit. I was standing in line and noticed that the food going in to their convection oven ‘smoker’ and the meat came out of a factory box, was precooked and they run through the oven to warm it up. Their advertizing makes it sound like they smoke it there in their ‘pit’. Anyone for warmed up factory made brisket? It looked to me that the food there is shipped in pre-made, they just warm it up. The people were friendly, the food was OK but expensive for something cooked in a factory and warmed up. Might as well get BBQ in a tub at the store.
BBQ-Grand Island NE location. We ordered some BBQ chicken and pork sandwiches today for me and a couple of co-workers and I have to say we were very disappointed. I had the 1 meat plate of chicken and it tasted like it was leftovers from the day before, very dry. My plastic fork was broken and bent by the time I was done. Waffle fries was okay, I got a 1/3 of the portion of what is normally served in an order. The Ceasar salad was the best part of the meal. My co-workers sandwich was similar in texture with soggy buns. We probably won’t go back there which is disappointing because we normally like their food. I’ve had a great experience in the Lincoln Nebraska location. I don’t think this location will survive if they keep serving food like that.
3.5 Stars, Fair – Good. Based on three visits in Nebraska. Twice at the Grand Island location. Once at the Kearney location.Brisket 4/5 That’s probably being a bit gracious. Tender, juicy, not all that flavorful though. I’ve had a lot worse. Pulled Pork 3/5 Nothing particular special. Again, tender moist but not all that flavorful. No bark in the mix.Ribs 2/5 Quite disappointing. Over-done. Tasted like origination is from old critters (beef). Texture okay. If these were pork, they certainly did not taste like it and, too much holding time in the wrap. Potato Salad 2/5 Bad potato salad. Bland, virtually no flavor.Cheesy Potato Casserole 4/5 Very good.Jalapeno Beans 4/5 Also, very good.Bread/Buns 4/5 One of the best things about the place.Apple Cobbler 4/5 Was offered a free sample. Good.Potion Size 5/5 You get good-sized portions here, just don’t expect real, authentic barbecue flavors. Atmosphere 4/5 Clean, music not too loud. Good layout and nice seating areas.Courteous staff/servers 5/5 Very good, friendly service.Value 3/4 The good is you get a lot to eat. The bad, it isn’t worth the price considering that authentic barbecue flavor is lacking.Barbecue Sauces 2/5 I’ve tried all three. They have Original, Spicy and Mild. Nothing spectacular here. Runny and way too much vinegar taste. All meat is cooked in large commercial smokers implementing use of hickory wood only. OVERALL SCORE: 3.5 Stars
Great ribs and chicken. Loved the warm bun and baked potato casserole. Ate inside and enjoyed the friendly servers. From ND so won’t be able to come back soon. Definately would give this barbeque place a 5/5.
