We stopped in here on a Saturday night in February. It is located in Lincoln’s historic Haymarket at the intersection of 8th and Q streets. We started off with their Crab Rangoon Dip appetizer. It’s sort of a deconstructed Crab Rangoon. You get fried wontons to dip into a krab (note the ‘k’ instead of a ‘c’ – no real crab here) and cream cheese mixture. There is also a sweet and sour sauce. This was pretty good. We ran out of wontons before we ran out of dip, so that was a bummer. It was a little rich, but the sweet and sour sauce helped to cut through the richness of the cream cheese mixture. We asked the waiter what was popular and what they were known for and, without hesitation, he pointed to the LeadBellies which is what this place calls its burgers. They are available as a beef burger, chicken breast, or veggie burger. I ordered the Raspberry Beret (as a beef burger) which is their most popular burger. My wife ordered their Red Rebel (as a chicken breast).I thought the Raspberry Beret was a little too sweet. I see what they were trying to do with the flavors, but it didn’t execute very well. I couldn’t taste any heat from the jalapeos and the jerked ginger peanut butter didn’t come through at all. Mostly, it tasted like a hamburger with raspberry jam on it. The burger patty was cooked to medium which is a nice change of pace from the well-done patties I’m always being served. (Note to Restaurateurs: If you don’t trust the quality of the beef or your staff’s food safety habits enough to offer burgers that are less than well-done, then get out of the burger business.)Service was friendly and attentive. It was a busy night, but our waiter kept up just fine and maintained a great attitude throughout the evening. It was a busy night and so we were sat in the back in some old train car. Not bad seats, but really plain dcor that didn’t have the same atmosphere and vibe that the rest of LeadBelly has. They might as well have sat us in a storage room.Overall, an okay place. Next time we’re in the Haymarket I’ll probably check out a different restaurant.
