Pho-reak. Yeah, I’m a little bit of a pho-reak. I haven’t been to Pho Nguyen for some time since there are other options now around town for a bowl of pho, but I decided to stop in and see if it was a good as I remember. As a pho-requent pho eater, I have to say this visit was a little disappointing.I started off with some spring rolls. The rice paper covering was not wrapped tightly enough, and was a little soggy. There weren’t enough greens in the spring roll. I like a little more actual greenery instead of limp cabbage. This was surprising as I remember the spring rolls being pretty good the last time I went there.I had the beef based pho with tofu instead of steak today. The broth was rich and slightly acidic. I think it has more flavor than the broth at other places. The tofu was prepared better than I’ve had it at the other Vietnamese restaurants. I like the smaller size of the fried tofu, but there was hardly any in my medium bowl. I felt the lack of tofu was unbalanced with all the noodles. The fresh greens this time were so skimped on that I would have asked for more if it wasn’t so busy. I got three strands of cilantro, and one leaf of another garnish. No mint or basil in sight. There were not enough veggies for my liking…no greens or anything else in the broth. I hope this is remedied soon! I pho-king love a good bowl of soup!
