Pretty Good. Kearney has better Mexican restaurants, in my opinion. However on balance el Maguey is pretty good. The complimentary chips were served fresh and warm, and were outstanding. The complimentary sauces were also good. My order of Enchiladas Acapulco, which consisted of shrimp and seafood enchiladas were good and filling. However the side of rice I ordered was very disappointing. Not sure how a restaurant could screw up rice so badly.Service was fast and friendly. The menu is large, with something for everyone.El Maguey is only about 5 minutes north of I-80 on the main highway into town. It is definitely worth a slight detour for interstate travelers tired of fast food and chain restaurants.
Good service, food needs work. I have eaten there twice and my favorite mexican dish ever is fajitas, chicken beef and shrimp all in one, have to say first time I have ever gotten that iron skillt not sizzling when brought out to me, first taste was very bland and taseless, had to cover with lots of hot sauce and guac, second time I gave it another chance and the same. I have eaten at an old dive Mexican place in Lincoln, NE and got to say none of the places in Kearney hold a candle to that place.
Good meal/Excellent Service. We went to El Maguey’s for dinner last night. We each had a different meal and both were very good. Marion, our waitress was GREAT! We will be back
Poor. We go out weekly for work and stumbled upon this place when it opened…this is definitely a skip. The only highlight was the free chips. I have been to all the other Mexican Restaurants in Kearney and this one was by far the worst…fried ice cream was the ultimate disappointment. Just go to Carlos O’Kelly’s
Best Mexican Food in Town?. I love Mexican food and have tried every Mexican restaurant in Kearney. I think it’s safe to say that El Maguey is one of (if not) the best (El Potrero is good…as is San Pedros, but stay far, far, far away from Little Mexico!). The first time I went, our waitress was a little flustered and didn’t know the menu very well (had to write down the prices of each entree as we ordered) and accidentally spilled soda all over the table and kept trying to take our plates before we were finished. Either way, the portions were big and the food was good. My parents loved the tamales. I had a vegetarian combo with a chile rellenos, bean taco, and tostada with rice. The only bad part of my meal was that they didn’t seed the chile of my chile rellenos and my last bite was just seeds which wasn’t exactly pleasant. Their complimentary chips are relatively mediocre, but they do have good salsa. The second time we went, the portions were considerably smaller (my chile rellenos was probably 1/3 the size of the first and the tamales were lacking filling). Our waitress was much better this time, but she overcharged me on my meal. The fried ice cream wasn’t as good as San Pedros, but regardless, I’ll more than likely be back for more.
