Tru Cafe is another local gem of Kearney that I’ve grown to love. Fresh roasted coffee and organic food with an artistic vibe is what keeps me coming back for more. I’m also digging their live music which is usually acoustic and light in nature. You’ll find Tru Cafe in the heart of downtown Kearney. The atmosphere is quite eclectic and they will sell you their art for the right price. The vibe is a trendy coffee shop with a laid back attitude. The service was punctual and friendly each time I’ve visited. The owner of the cafe chatted with me at length about the cafe and about Kearney in general. He was quite excited about some changes to the menu they were going to implement including offering breakfast at 7am. They roast their own coffee beans and I’ve enjoyed each brew when I stroll through in the mornings. I’m a big fan of their Bison Meatfloaf Hoagie which is modest in proportion and scrumptious to the last bite. They have a good selection of beer and wine to keep the good times rolling.Overall I would rate Tru Cafe higher except their hours really bug me. They open at 7am but don’t serve food until 10am. They close at 4pm most days and then some days are open until 9pm. Can’t compute, much confuse.

Tru Cafe wins more than a few style points. It is visually attractive, with a pleasant color scheme and relaxing, somewhat avant garde vibe. Seating is offered indoors and (in good weather) outside on a quaint patio, complete with water bowl for thirsty pets. The menu is streamlined. Each day features two rotating soups, plus a few salads and sandwiches. Hummus is prominently featured on the appetizer list. Picky eaters might not be satisfied with the limited menu selection, but there should be something of interest for most people. I don’t think anything is fried, which is a nice switch.Portions are adequate but for the most part not overly generous, which seems to well serve the mostly female clientele. My gazpacho soup was quite good, and I was happy to see it offered, as few restaurants feature it, even though it is a perfect summertime menu item. The crisp celery and cucumber slices paired well with the diced tomatoes. The turkey wrap sandwich was, on the other hand, a bit underwhelming. Both in size and flavor. Perhaps 6 blue corn chips and two thin apple slices accompanied the wrap.About 3 dozen interesting beers are sold by the bottle. A dozen or so lower cost wines are offered by either the glass or bottle. Mixed drinks are also sold.Service was fine, if somewhat perfunctory. All in all, I can say I ate here. With so many good dining options so close by, I won’t rush back.

Inhospitable environment. We were very excited to try this place out – it has a super cool ambiance, the coffee was fine, we were planning on coming back for sure. But when we walked in, we weren’t greeted. It was super awkward as he didn’t talk to us at all as we ordered. Just not a friendly/hospitable vibe.I brought my husband there for his birthday and had two cupcakes. After we bought our coffee, we asked for two forks, and he refused to give them to us because we weren’t allowed to eat anything not bought at their cafe. As it was his birthday, it left a very bad taste in our mouths – especially since we’ve been allowed to bring food into multiple other coffee shops. We won’t be back. We highly suggest Sweetwater Mill at the opposite side of downtown Kearney. Super friendly, warm environment with great coffee and treats inside.

Really great lunch. Chicken salad and bagels with cheese and apples were both amazing. Staff super nice. Fun art on walls.
