I tried China Bowl for the first time recently. My wife and I ordered take out. I ordered General Chicken and Shrimp Fried Rice, both of these dishes are complex or exotic so my expectations were pretty low. The food was ready in the time frame the young lady quoted me on the phone. The staff was friendly and the inside was very clean and modern looking. The food was still very hot after the short trip home. Both of the main dishes were the small versions and were enough to satisfy us. The chicken was cooked well and the sauce was good. I wasn’t sure what to expect as each place has a different recipe, China Bowl’s recipe lacks veggies and focuses on the sauce, chicken, and about 4 small broccoli. The fried rice was pretty weak, lacked flavor, too many frozen veggies but the shrimp was cooked well. I will for sure check it out again, and try something off their speciality menu. In this area there aren’t a lot of really good Asain resturants so for something hot and fast it’s better than the HyVee next door. The prices are a little high but that’s common in this neighborhood.

Good. I was having a busy day and was about to hit the road and decided I better grab something quick since I missed lunch and wasn’t sure I’d be getting dinner. So, I wandered into China Bowl at 2PM on a Saturday after shopping next door at Hy-Vee.Restaurant was empty when I walked in. No customers. Though, that’s to be expected mid-afternoon in a strip mall restaurant. The owners kids were occupying a table in the dining room and entertaining themselves with electronic devices, coloring, and reading. This annoys a lot of people, but it’s mostly a cultural thing. I don’t mind it at all. It’s the family business. In fact, I sort of expect to see it when I walking into a small privately-owned Asian restaurant during off-peak hours.I ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken (real adventurous of me) and an egg roll. Food arrived quickly and was piping hot. Visually, it was a rather boring entre to look at, but it tasted good. It was basically rice and deep fried chicken covered in sweet and sour sauce. No veggies at all.The restaurant was a bit hot inside. It was as if they had already switched from A/C to heat for the year and now an unseasonably warm day had turned the place into a sauna.Overall, decent Chinese-American cuisine at decent prices. If I am in the area and hungry, then I’ll probably stop in again.
