Tasty Downtown Dining. Dining at Stewart + Ogden was a treat for me and my beau over the weekend. As a downtowner, I’ve stopped in for breakfast once and lunch several times (Chop Salad!), but Sunday was my first time to eat dinner at the diner nestled inside Downtown Grand and I certainly will be back. We started out with the Buffalo Wings as an appetizer and they were darn near perfect. Everyone has their preference for wings, but these nailed the big three categories for me: heat, texture, flavor. Just enough heat to wake me up, lightly crisp on the outside and succulent inside + a balanced tangy wing sauce that dunked deliciously in the homemade blue cheese dressing. They weren’t drenched in sauce, but they weren’t dry either. Just enough sauce to make my mouth water. For the main dish, I ordered the short ribs. I was curious about this dish and my curiosity paid off. Again…texture & flavor for the win! The crisp, crunchy edges of the short ribs locked in the tender juices of the meat. The sauce was a tad bit sweet for my liking, but when you scooped up some of the yukon mashed potatoes with each bite, the savory flavor of the taters balanced out the rich gravy of the short ribs. This was my first time to ever eat short ribs, and I fell the standard has been set. Service was friendly and efficient. Atmosphere was mellow and stylish. Food was VERY good. We cleaned our plates and I’ll certainly wander back to the turquoise booths of Stewart + Ogden.
Price shock. I had read In the R-J that in April ticket holders to Sunday shows at the Smith Center would be charged 1/2 price so I changed plans, sorry Fat Choy, and headed downtown. I was mildly surprised to discover it was a coffee shop with chandeliers and a bar. Since we had already enjoyed OJ in the room, we only ordered entrees from the breakfast menu plus a coffee for my wife. Her stomach was still queasy, so she requested blueberry pancakes that were loaded with blueberries but otherwise nothing out of the ordinary. I, in turn, went with Hawaiian French toast – coconut and pina colada crusted brioche with berry compote and a fancy, almost maple syrup. The French toast was good, but not nearly as good as the description would imply. Menu prices struck me as being on the high side, chandeliers or not, for a downtown coffee shop. Service was very professional.
