Over the past 15 years or so, the handful of legit Ethiopian restaurants have dwindled. Thankfully Merkato is still holding on. The secret here is the food is excellent! If you’ve never tried Ethiopian food, you’re in for a ride, especially in dealing with the buckwheat based, Injera bread. (Though I understand they offer two types of bread.) Next to know is, one order, might feed two people. So if you order two items, be hungry. We ordered the special Yebeg Wot. A well spiced and seasoned lamb in butter and rosemary, along with the traditional vegetarian platter. Along with some Ethiopian beer and honey wine (a bit like mead) which was delicious. I must say, especially concerning the Yebeg Wot, we felt like we were having a borderline, fine dining experience. Our server was patient, fun and eager to have us try something new. Ultimately the biggest shock is how affordable it was. Honestly had we not ordered drinks, two of us may have escaped for less than $20! I highly recommend (carefully) venturing into this mid-city neighborhood and try Merkado. You won’t be disappointed.
