There is a bit of art sweeping through Reno and that includes the culinary arts though Reno is behind Salt Lake at the other side of the Great Basin and hobbled by the artless casinos. Daughters Cafe is part of the new wave, set in cool old home close to the River Walk. It’s a most pleasant place to pass time. The menu suffers from the usual American tyranny of egg based dishes. But I escaped all that with the beignet, sausage, and fruit plate which was very good and quite filling enough to bypass lunch for an early dinner. The meal includes a curious radish which does a good job balancing the fat of the sausage, and a few peas which seem out of place. I’m a bit conflicted as to whether the four beignets served is one too many or just decadently right on a cold day.
Disappointed. We tried to eat here 2 Saturday’s ago. We were greeted by a lot of confused customers sitting and waiting, tables full of dirty dishes, and a woman who appeared to be working alone. At first we felt sympathy for the woman and her understaffed conditions until she spoke. The smell of alcohol was so overwhelming, I couldn’t help but step backwards. She proceeded to ramble about an hour wait, 30 minute wait, who knows. She changed her story a few times. We did not return nor do we plan to any time soon.
