VISIT THE ‘GATOR. Ollie’s (as the regulars call it) is pretty much a typical bar/restaurant, with above average food. However, in an area where Appleby’s and IHOP are considered the culinary highpoint, this place is definitely worth a visit. Actually, it’s worth becoming a regular. The decor, on the darkish side, is typical of these places, with pictures of the host ‘Gator in various spots, and all kinds of junk nailed to the walls to keep you amused. TV’s over the bar and other areas, with no sound, usually tuned to some type of sporting event. Booths and tables are pretty close together, enough to be mildly annoying, but not bad enough to make you get claustrophobic. They do have a tiny area with a few tables that you can eat/drink and smoke as well, outside in front. Believe it or not, although the review doesn’t sound like it, it is a very comfortable place.Service is pretty much standard. Waitstaff are attentive for the most part, with some that are stellar, and some that are a waste of oxygen. By and large, acceptable. They have a facebook page, which is one of the most useless that I’ve ever seen. There’s no mention of food whatsoever, and damned if I can figure out what direction they are supposed to be aiming for. Don’t bother. They DO have a website, and that’s MUCH better. Do hit that one.Food. Yes, finally, we come to that. Many years ago, under different management, their food actually made the place worthy of Destination Dining. Frequent specials that were worthy of the title, theme dinners, and much more had this place packed all the time. As I said, a management change, and the economy (I suppose) have ratcheted things down a bit. The menu was cut (although, it is still very big), and special dining nights were out. The food however, did not suffer in preparation. Portions are really big, to put it mildly. Their food is pretty uniform in quality, prepared very well almost all of the time. There are occasions when the cook is having a bad day, but it is rare, and I’ve never seen anyone get abused for sending something back. In fact, special kudos to the manager, who always comes out to apologize and make things right, if need be. In fact, the manager makes frequent rounds all of the time, checking with the guests to make sure everything is good. And good it is. In fact, most of their food is delicious. Go to the website to see their menus, which range from a huge assortment of appetizers (Noteworthy: Buffalo tenders, onion rings, quesadilla) Soups (Their snapper is the best I’ve ever had) Salads (Huge assortment of huge salads with everything from chicken, steak, tuna, crab and more) sandwiches and burgers (with more than the average items, again, check out the website menu) and Entrees (New Orleans Pasta, jambalaya, ettouffee, steaks, ribs, chicken, seafood, turkey, on and on and on…) Desserts are crap. Don’t bother. They have value lunches (8 of them) for $5.99 which includes soup or salad, pickles and chips, and value dinners (also 8 of them) for $10.99 which includes entree, soup or salad and dessert. The choices are actually really good, not just throw-away entrees. In summary, this is a relaxing place to have a really good meal, and is worth the trip to this little strip mall in Berlin NJ.
