Calentado tan rico, casual, friendly, accommodating. Although calentado (usually, rice, beans, eggs, and some kind of meat, what I think of as a sort of Colombian fried rice) is usually a breakfast dish, they made some for me at about 2 in the afternoon. The scrambled eggs with peppers, onions and tomato (small pieces) were creamy and the rice and beans were moist and appetizing, the rice colored and flavored mildly with a bean-colored sauce and bits of egg. (I think calentado might be like Scottish scones in that everyone has their own style in making it.)I ordered the chorizo version, and the dish came with a full piece of chorizo on top, as well as pieces of chorizo in the rice and beans. (This is the kind that tastes somewhat like a ballpark hotdog, but with a nicer texture – more compact and less grainy, as well as less salty.) You can also get the calentado with chicharrones or carne asada, or just with eggs. I also got one of the wedges of cake they had at the counter. I first mistook it for chocolate cake, it was so dark. I was told it was made with figs and spices. I had never tried this kind of cake before but found the slight sharpness of the spices refreshing after the creaminess of the calentado, The cake’s texture reminded me of 1-2-3-4 apple cake, but it was richer tasting, and I think it was moistened with wine.It was 12 dollars for the calentado and the slab of cake, which in that area, is a bargain. Their menu says the bandeja tipica (platter with steak, rice, beans, plaintains, sausage, chicharron, egg and avocado) is $14.They have specials on the weekends, but unfortunately I can’t remember what they all were. Their menu says they have beef tripe soup on Sundays as well as lulo, a juice that I also want to try. The atmosphere was nice, gourmet and casual cafe. It’s not a large space, but there are about 10 tables inside, as well as tables for outdoor dining. So good, I wish I lived closer by!
