Japanese version of CostCo and food court rolled into one. My daughter is fascinated with all things Japanese, so she had to make a pilgrimage to Mitsuwa when we were on a trip to visit Manhattan. The grocery store and all the satellite eateries were crazy-busy the day Sunday we dropped in because of a food festival. They do that a lot, according to the store calendar. This place is a non-stop cultural party! In addition to groceries for their pantry and some desultory pre-made sushi for our drive back to the Washington, D.C. area, we got some baked goods from the Hamada-ya shop inside the store. The best was a pear Danish with an entire canned pear half in the centre. There was a nice buttery taste to the dough wrapped around its edges. I’m not a huge fan of European pastries cooked by Asian bakers — too often, they turn out like distorted, funhouse mirror versions of what I’m accustomed to — but Hamada-Ya gets it right.
