Authentic and best sushi in the Metro area!. My hubby has known the head sushi chef at Tatsumi for about 30 years. But we only found out by accident that he was here. My hubby chose this is as official birthday dinner with me. This is better than Yasuda and without the pretense IMO. The ambiance and tone of the restaurant is authentic and fun.Restaurants are getting more and more expensive to maintain in Manhattan where the chef used to work. The chef used to own a restaurant in the East Village. My husband went there for years. The chef sold it and moved to NJ. We did not know he was here. We drove by here and peaked it and saw the chef after we ate at the other place!Authentic Japanese sushi is getting harder and harder to find as well. This is authentic! At an authentic Japanese restaurant they serve what they say is on the menu unlike many restaurants that serve sushi that are not Japanese owned. More and more NYC/NJ diners are not able to even identify the fish being served so they are often fooled. Here most of the diners were Japanese. There were a few mixed couples of Japanese and white and African American. We heard Japanese being spoken so that is how we knew they were Japanese. I used to speak Japanese. I do not speak it any more or I do not have the opportunity to speak it much so I do not remember unless I hear it and they were speaking Japanese.I had Sashimi deluxe. My husband had Omakase. First I need to explain what true Omakase is and is not. Omakase is not what it seems to mean to many US based sushi eaters which seems to be a competition to dazzle bored taste buds. The concept of Omakase has become a diluted experience in the US. It has become an excuse for chefs to charge more money than necessary. He went to another high end sushi restaurant ordered Omakase and got the bill. It was 500.00 dollars. He had to charge it!True Omakase is not for snobs. It is an experience between the chef and diner. Because the chef has known my husband for so long he knew what to give him and what not to give him. It is considered disrespectful to the chef to eat spicy tuna rolls yet many who do not know better order them. I personally refuse to eat spicy tuna rolls for cultural reasons and so does my husband. He did not get spicy tuna rolls but authentic Japanese sushi. It was a great choice from the chef and I think I deleted some of the pictures so there were more pictures. The selection was very respectful on the chefs part to give the selections that he gave. There were some unique fish that we have not had on the East coast before in the Omakase.I told the chef I am deathly allergic to shell fish. So he washed his hands and made mine first. Such service and class. The sushi was all super fresh , service was super friendly , decor was modern Japanese, and very clean.
