JUST AWFUL. We have one simple rule for evaluating restaurants: If we leave feeling better than when we arrived then it can be called good and from there it can achieve great or exceptional depending on just how well they execute the food, service, and overall dining experience. In the case of Nicholas, it achieved the nearly impossible. We left feeling substantially worse than when we arrived. I could write a long drawn out critique but for the sake of brevity, here it is:The front of house is ruining whatever is being done well in the kitchen. The staff is inept, inconsiderate, and honestly dont give a damn about you. They are focused inwardly, on minutiae like utensil replacement while the diners suffer. This is the key: we didnt see anyone laughing, joking, or even smiling while they ate. We certainly werent. The entire place is oppressive, snotty, and absurdly pompous given that while the menu is ambitious, it rarely meets the expectation it sets. You know it was terrible when we passed on even ordering dessert or coffee, just wanting to get the hell out of there as soon as possible. You read that right: we couldnt leave soon enough. We have eaten at some of the finest establishments in Europe, Asia, S. America and obviously NYC and the good ol USA. To put this place anywhere on a list of the best restaurants in NJ, much less the entire country, is absurd.

Daniel, Per Se, there are the kind of restaurants that are on the level of food, taste, service, creativity. The best that NYC fine dining has to offer near the Jersey shore.
Really Disappointing. Avoid this place.. This is one of the worst values for the money I have found in a long time. Their portions are really small. Their wait staff, although hovering, is not knowledgeable, nor helpful. Two of our party of four seriously considered stopping for pizza on the way home because we were not satisfied. This was afer dropping $270 a couple. If you want a highly pretentious experience, with poorly trained staff, and very very small portions, this is your place. There are numerous restaurants in Red Bank for a fraction of the cost. This is not a 4 star restaurant, beware!!!!!
Make The Drive. Recently I made a business trip to NJ, a friend recommended Restaurant Nicholas in Red Bank, NJ, well it was a100 mile one way drive, and all I can say.Magnificent !MAKE THE DRIVE!
It’s a WOW!. Truly world class cuisine. Winning wine list plus nice selection of excellent wines by the glass.
Disappointed. I have eaten here several times before and I was impressed. Albeit it is a distance from my home so only go once a year generally. The prices are high so I expect the experience to be top notch. The service was decent lacking the flourishes of presentation that made this place special. The portions were lacking. Two of us had the lobster which was a $10 surcharge to the prix fixed 3 course. If it was a one pound lobster I would be astonished and it was only the claw and tail, no knuckle meat. The gnocchi appetizer consisted of 4 tablespoons, a tablespoon of ice cream on my desert plate. The only decently sized servings were the corn soup and the soft shell crabs.
