I ate at 77 Walnut the first week of June. You can definitely tell they’re going through growing pains trying to find their identity in a place like Montclair. The food was excellent but very pricey compared to other restaurants close by. Appetizers came out of the kitchen sooo fast, but the wait for our entrees was rediculous. When we finally got our dinners, we forgave the long wait, our pork chops were spot on. Cooked to perfection and served with a delicious potato gratin. For desserts we tried one of everything and the standout was the amazing orange-creamcicle Creme brle. I’d definitely reccomend trying it once. Just bring your own wine because $3 for a coke is crazy.
De-lovely. I read Cathy’s review and was surprised.. We had quite the opposite experience. We were there on Valentines Day and it was a fabulous meal. The restaurant was filled with beautiful roses and it was quite romantic. We started with a delicious crab salad, then as our main courses we had a perfectly cooked grouper in parchment paper, something you rarely see these days. My husband ordered the beef wellington that had a wonderful red wine reduction. It was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious that we kept trading plates!. I love oysters and the ones we had were sublime. They came with a shallot and rice wine sauce that was perfectly balanced and not at all acidic.. Even though Valentines Day is always crazy in restaurants our dinner was lovely, relaxed and not at all hurried. It was not $100 per person as earlier posted so I wonder if they are talking about a different restaurant. We have been back twice since ( last night) and the regular dinner menu is also wonderful. Try the douple thick pork chop that made me swoon! Hubby had the duck confit as an appitizer… mmmmm mmmmm! We go to all of the restaurants in Montclair and this one is a real winner.
Let down. For 100.00 a person, one expects to be fed brilliantly. The dinner rolls were so cold it was if they had thawed on a counter, too cold on which to spread the butter which had raw garlic in it. The appetizer of oysters was standard, but one oyster was mealy. The main course had more of an institutional kitchen feel than the fresh, ingredient driven cuisine most of us have come to expect in a new restaurant. The potatoes were so scaldingly hot they seemed microwaved. Perhaps we would have given this place a second chance, but the price for this sort of ordinary, hotel inspired food was beyond off putting. We were fed our courses so fast our meal was over in an under an hour, like at a diner.
