DO NOT avoid this place!. I love it. Absolutely. The owner, George, is in fact very hospitable and the food is delicious. I’m only leaving a review because I was shocked by the awful review below. I’ve eaten out at beautiful restaurants around the world, but in my town of Montclair, this is my favorite, that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

Avoid this place!. Becasue of the good reviews, we went back a second time even though we weren’t impressed the first time. The second dinner confirmed it: this place is mediocre at best. It’s overpriced and just not that good. The lobster quesedilla was on par with taco bell. The veal milanese was greasy and smothered by an over-dressed salad. The owner is arrogant and cranky, not interested in customer service at all. You eat your dinner in what is basically a mini-mall; the ambiance is a joke. There is a much older crowd that frequents this place. I can’t help but wonder if the good reviews are because this clientele simply isn’t that discriminating. The ownership should be thanking its lucky stars for this clientele. The place wouldn’t survive otherwise. Of all the wonderful restaurants in the wonderful town of Montclair, this is one to be avoided!

Great atmosphere, good food. We picked Bistro 18 to celebrate my cousin’s 50th. For starters, the eggplant tapenade was slightly sweet and just perfect with the bread. My beef carpacio was a generous serving and very good-although thinner slices would have made it even better. My red snapper in a potato crust was excellent and they accomodated my request for a substitution of risotto instead of spinach. My cousin’s filet mignon was very good except a bit more cooked than requested. Our service was friendly and effecient. We had some great desserts to end our evening- panna cotta, their signature napolean, creme brulee which my friend thoroghly enjoyed and my sister loved a stuffed fig special. Overall we had a wonderful experience and would return to this byob.

Rushed and rude. The food was generally fine, but it was hard to enjoy it. When we arrived at 6 P.M. to an almost empty restaurant, the maitre d’ tried to seat us at the worst table and expressed no sense of welcome. Then we were rushed through dinner. The entree arrived exactly one minute after the appetizer plates were taken. Any fine restaurant will have a small break between courses. Clearly, our food was waiting under a heating lamp. One should not need to eat dinner while ever vigilant about the waiter who repeatedly offers to take away your plate. I would never take a client here or bring a family member for a special dinner.

Better luck next time. The restaurant is small but has a very nice cozy atmosphere!! The bread and Caribbean salad are delicious would definately order again. The tender skirt steak is not tender, very chewy – Foodtown sells a better cut than the butcher the restaurant is using. The vanilla gelato tasted like regular vanilla ice cream and the tortilla cup was not sweet.Planning on returning to try something else !
