Love it. My new addiction…. My husband and I went with some friends of ours and for the most part, enjoyed it. We were given the option of sitting outdoors in the courtyard, but the day we went it was a bit muggy out, so we decided on indoors. The ambiance was pretty nice, good mix of music, had some nice middle-eastern inlaid wood tables and beeded chandeliers. The service can use some work, I’d give that 3 stars. We were seated right away (on a Thursday night, not sure if I’d expect that on a weekend). Our waiter came by and took our drink order and brought them right away. She swung by 5 min later to ask if we were ready to order, but we asked for just another minute…bad choice. 20 min went by before she returned and at that point we had eaten all of our mixed pickles and pita. When she did return, our waiter didn’t seem she knew the menu too well, she had a difficult time answering our questions. If it wasn’t for great company and us eating dinner at a regular time that night and not being too hungry, we would have probably asked for the managers. For an appetizer we ordered the sampler and some cheese filo rolls. It was outstanding, possibly the best part of the meal. (I could’ve ordered another sampler for dinner). For dinner, I had the Shrimp tripoli-$17 (Jumbo shrimp in a spicy pepperoncinni sauce) served over rice. My wife had the filet mignon kebob – $19 (filet tips grilled and served with basmati) . Nancy and Jack had the swordfish kebob $19 and Lamb special $18 . All were delicious and great portions. **If you’re ordering a special, expect a very large portion! Jack had leftovers… I’d give the food 5 stars. It’s as authentic as can be. If service improved, this would be our regular weekend choice.. but we’ll be back to see. If not for dinner, possibly for take out or catering. Visited July 2013
After being sat directly in front of the kitchen door, it was all downhill. Our appetizers (a salad and fried dough) took 45 minutes. Dinner came before we were even done. My shrimp weren’t cooked through. Couldn’t get a refill on my drink to save my life. Got dessert to go – opened the box at home and the disappointment only continued. Don’t waste your time (hours upon hours) or your money.
A good choice for masochists. 20 minutes after we sat down and still had not seen a waiter, I went to get one. He came. We ordered a beet salad to start. After another 25 minutes a Greek salad was put in front of us. After another 30 minutes we asked the waiter where our food was. We were told it would be ready in just a minute. Another 30 minutes went by and I was brought surf and turf. I had ordered French sea bass. I told the manager that wasnt what I ordered and that we were leaving. He begged us to stay and offered to prepare something else. I said that we didnt have another hour to wait. He told us he would prepare the dish himself and said that the dinner was on him and offered us dessert, as well. Since I had purchased a Groupon the offer of a free dinner didnt mean much but he was well meaning.Oh, about the food. Its pretty good if you have a couple hours to kill waiting for it.
Not Worthy of Montclair. I had been yearning to try Mediterranea for quite some time. I often frequent Montclair and whenever I walked by this place my eyes were always drawn to their outdoor patio. Although Fall has begun the weather has been a bit shifty lately and the temps got warm once again. So this past Friday my husband and I were able to sit outside and enjoy probably one of our last summery al fresco dining experiences this year. We both ordered the Chicken Kebabs for dinner. The chicken itself was fresh enough and was neither dried out or fatty, but the dish as a whole was actually disappointing and boring. The kebabs were served unskewered and without grilled vegetables. Instead, the dish came with a lame, thinly sliced peppers and onions salad that was unmemorable. I would have much rather preferred the norm-an accompaniment of fresh, grilled veggies. We also received one quarter of a tomato which was grilled to the color BLACK…no joke! Mediterranea serves its dishes with what they call seasoned Basmati rice which I had the opportunity to try for the first time and did not like one bit. Its possible that they may have added their own seasoning to the rice, especially because Ive never met a rice I didnt like! This one turned me off because of some flavor in it that I could not quite identify…the best I could do to describe it is that it may have had a weird lemony taste. It was also clumpy in parts so I assume that it wasnt very fresh. In my opinion the service here was both lacking and uncaring. It was too much effort for our server to clear away any of our plates. Someone else eventually came along and took them from us. Various random waitstaff came by asking us if we wanted coffee or dessert after we had already conveyed to our server that we were done and we were just waiting on him to return back our paid bill. Things like this come off as intrusive and irritating when you have numerous people coming over to your table and none of them have any clue as to what is going on. It just displays poor communication and I wouldnt be surprised if that is typical here. When our server returned our credit card and receipt he slipped it on to our table unnaturally quick, without even giving us a glance…I couldnt believe that he didnt say a word of goodbye or appreciation to us! I mean the guy was definitely very noticeably weird and extremely awkward, but REALLY? It just goes to show how common courtesy is lacking in todays society. That is pretty much all that I have to say about Mediterranea. I would never go back. Even the ambiance inside the restaurant isnt nice at all and I was surprised to see what a dump it looked like. Their three main draws are that they are in hip downtown Montclair, they have an outdoor patio, and that you can smoke flavored Hookah there if that floats yer boat. Im just relieved that I hadnt suggested trying this place with friends…Id feel really guilty about taking them to such a pitiful place!

My new addiction!. We visited mediterranea with some friends from out of town last Saturday night and it was fantastic. I was a bit skeptical considering there were other restaurants in the area, but when I saw the diverse menu, I thought it would give us some nice menu options. The place has an authentic Mediterranean decor, kind of like a fusion of Morrocan and Turkish. We sat in the front, it was a little bit of a tight walk to get there, but after we sat down everything was beautiful! The tables, the chandeliers, the art, the decor, everything! Trust me, when you see it, youll agree…no ikea furniture in this place. All authentic! Our waiter Danielle was very helpful. She suggested several great appetizers to start. We ordered the appetizer sampler which gave us 8 different ones to try for the price of about 2 or 3. In addition we got this red pepper and pomegranate molasses dip called muhammarah (I think thats how you spell it?). Let me just say… we were already impressed even before trying the entrees. For our main courses my husband got the filet mignon kebab and I had the bronzini, while our friends had the lamb shank and chicken Tripoli (spicy). No complaints whatsoever. The presentation wasnt that great, but the taste was out of this world. My husband says he hasnt had meat that tender in a very long time. Finally after dinner, we asked to sit out in the courtyard for dessert . The homemade pistachio baklava (probably the best weve had) and the turkish tea were a remarkable finale to a very enjoyable dinner. Danielle offered us a hookah to try and we were all game. We tried the apple pie ala mod flavor, which probably sounds bizarre, was actually really flavorful smoother than other hookah bars. The courtyard couldve used some more greenery; nonetheless, the cool breeze coming through the long alley from bloomfield ave and vines hanging along the wall were awesome. Oh, I almost forgot, this place is a bring your own and theres a wine store right across the street! It was very convenient. Our out-of-town guests were pretty impressed and we went home very pleased. Its tough to choose a good place in Montclair to eat because there are so many different restaurants, but this place did not disappoint. Keep up the great work overall great experience. 2 appetizers, 4 entrees, 2 desserts, tea, and hookah all for right under $100 We will definitely be back soon… this time, with more room left for dessert 😉
Very nice. I have been to Mediterranea a few times over the past 6 months. I have never been disappointed by the service or the food. This is a great value for the price. I will say when sitting next to the fountain it is a little loud. I will fix that next time by sitting a little further away. This really is a very nice place. Keep it up.
