Steak was great but their appetizers are the true winners. Besides the fact the patio is right next to Route 22…had a nice experience at Char and would definitely recommend trying this place out.

Outstanding. Chars ruined me for other restaurants. The food was prepared so well, so delicious, so fresh & so attractively, that I feel I never want to eat anywhere else again. I felt like royalty. The staff was extrememly attentive and eager to please. The atmosphere was relaxing and easy. You won’t be dissapointed with your meal here.I recommend the crab cake appetizer and anyone of their steaks.Their prices are expensive, but you can see & taste why.

Fantastic! The food is always fresh and of the best quality- their wine selection is out of this world. Did I mention their sides?? Sauted mushroom caps are delicious!

Great overall experience – brings NY to NJ. We had a really great first experience at Char Steakhouse. We visited on Saturday 21st October just as they were opening for service, but within an hour the place was bustling. It reminded me of a trendy NY restaurant, with a modern but warm dcor in dark reds and browns, ambient lightning and a really great feel to the place. What I particularly liked was how the restaurant was divided into several areas, a designated restaurant area, a quieter booth area towards the back, a bustling bar where you can also eat, and an outside dining area on the patio with space heaters. We sat in the main restaurant area, but I could see us coming back to just sit back and enjoy the atmosphere in the bar or the patio in the summer for a more casual night out.The service we received was fantastic. Our waiter was Dario who was more than knowledgeable about both the restaurant (including the new branch they are opening in Red Bank) and the menu. He helped to guide us through some of the choices and was professional warm and attentive. He definitely keeps an eye on his tables and was often re-pouring our drinks before we had even realized our glasses were empty. For appetizers I chose the crab cakes which were some of the most flavorsome I have ever tasted and really a good portion size. My husband had the stuffed mushrooms which were equally as delicious. He was also toying between two of the steaks and Dario was great in helping to talk him through them. In the end he chose the Gotham cooked medium, which he described as one of the best steaks he had ever eaten. He was eventually beaten by the portion size, but luckily Dario offered to doggy bag it for him. I chose a non steak option for which they have a whole section on the menu, which was a really nice touch. I have the New Zealand lamb rack which was delicious. My only minor complaint was the gravy sauce it came in was a little too salty for my taste but then again I have a very low salt tolerance and am sure this was my personal preference. My side order of potato gratin was wonderfully creamy and rich and I could have eaten that as a main dish! Our deserts where also fantastic. I had the chocolate brownie and my husband the pecan and bourbon bread pudding. Both were served with Wild Turkey ice cream, some of the best ice cream I have ever tasted. Before arriving our only concern had been the price of some of the items, they are slightly more expensive than I guess your typical Steakhouse, probably more like NY prices (between mid $20s – $40 for the steak option). However they are definitely not unjustified. The portions are large, quality cuts of meat, the food well made and the service we received excellent. The eclectic mixture of guests and the atmosphere in the place really made us feel we had more than just great meal but a great all around experience. Its place with character and something to rival any NY Steakhouse.

Great experience. My best friend Len suggested that we go to Chars for dinner on Friday. He is the local, I am from California. We arrived and were greeted by a lovely, polite, and professional hostess. We were seated quickly in the area requested. The food was good. Not the best, but good enough. The waitress was one of the best of my restaurant career. The way she explained the different steaks and cuts of beef was nothing short of amazing. When Len contradicted her on one of the cuts, she reassured him that he should try it again and he would be happy. She was right. Long story short. I have never left a review before. That’s how good our dinner experience was.

I bartend for a living and must say this place is great! Food, service & atmosphere were top notch. The problem w those negative reviews are that those idiots are cheap! It’s not about money but a good time and memories! This place is awesome!
