Turnpike food is like being stuck on an airplane. I don’t like American fast food in general — all the chains are the same, everywhere in the country, and the food might as well be made out of plastic. It’s even worse when one is going from Point A to Point NYC on a toll road like the Turnpike. Who wants to go through the trouble of turning off, paying up and then searching for an eatery? Especially when it’s only going to be a quickly-forgotten bite. It’s like being on an airplane. You eat what’s there because you’re stuck.We were road-weary and wanting to get geared up for our entry to the not-terribly-distant Big Apple, so we stopped at this plaza. Quiznos seemed like the least awful option of the chains here. The meatball sub I had was OK for a snack. It tasted like 66% of a REAL meatball sub that one would find at an independent restaurant that takes pride in its food. There was a bit of spiciness to the sauce, the bread was toasty and the meatballs were moist. I was not fond of the processed-type cheese triangles Quiznos puts on top of their subs. They browed up nicely under the salamander, but would real mozzarella be so hard? Ah, but that costs the corporation real money, and oil-based plasticheese is cheap…
