Checkers downtown Trenton, NJ. I love this restaurant / pub and it’s owner Tom is a delight. Over the 33 years I have been going to Checkers, I would say that overall, all of his employees throughout my years of patronizing him are very attentive and polite. My top 3 items are his Hamburgers, Waldorf Salad and the specials, not to mention the homemade soups, particularly, for me the cream soups. Keep up the good work.Michele F.

Great Lunch Spot. Checkers is a fun hidden gem of Trenton. Problem its an open secret. This place is well worth a visit. I love to stop in and get some lunch when I’m feeling like a sandwich, or a burger. They have great burgers on a pita, with homemade potato salad. They have some great beer, I always get a Black & Tan. The food is always good. Sometimes when Checkers is busy I get some pizza next door and head back for a beer. There is always room to drink in Checkers. The bar maids and waitresses are the best. They give you quick service. Its a friendly crowd, don’t be shy just talk to whoever. It get VERY busy, but you can always find a table. I don’t come during peak periods, Its great for a quiet meal in a crowded place. You should go to checkers.
I LOVE IT!. I have been going to Checkers for lunch as a state worker for many, many years and the quality of the food has always been incredible. There is nothing like a break in the middle of the day at Checkers to enjoy a cocktail and a flamed broiled burger cooked to perfection on pita bread with tomato, onion and pickle, oh and potato salad with red bliss potato. I love it there and will continue to go as long as it remains the same. Thumbs up to Checkers downtown Trenton!
Looks can be deceiving. Checkers is aimed at State workers and is located on South Warren Street. From the looks of it, you would think that it was either a greasy spoon or a dive bar.I recently relocated to Downtown Trenton and the choices of GOOD places to eat were far and few. The Food Court on West State Street had mediocre food at best. I happened to go to Checkers one day because the Italian restaurant next door, Columbus was mobbed.Checkers was dark and a bar filled the whole right side (and it was filled). My friends and I had to wait about 10 minutes to get a table as the place was pretty crowded. We opted for the cheeseburgers which were being prepared right next to us on an open flame. Your burger is ordered to choice and it comes with chips or potato salad. You also have a few more options–hard roll, pita bread or on a platter. This cheeseburger was devine and well worth the $5.75. By far this seems to be the most popular item on the menu. However, I have had: Orzo Salad, Taco Salad, Tuna Melt and incredible Chile. They have a daily special of different soups as well as salads (so you are not eating burgers everyday). The food is great. The place is clean. The atmosphere is fun. Many State workers have a drink or two before heading back to work (makes for happy workers). My friends and I have begun going on Friday nights and it has started to remind me of Cheers…everyone seems to know everyone else. The grapefruit Martini is great. It is made much stronger after work then during lunch hour. The owners are happy, have a good attitude and are nice people. These factors has had us coming back time after time. Clean, freshly prepared food sums this place up.
