The atmosphere and service at Black Olive was great. Our waiter was very attentive and the space feels much bigger than it is thanks to some cool modern design choices. The acoustics aren’t the greatest, but really, have you ever been in a quiet Greek restaurant?Moving onto the most important part, the food, I would sum up my first meal here as not bad. It was not the best Greek food I’ve ever eaten, but it was not terrible by any means. I love Greek food. So as far as the staples go, I know how they should taste. I know every restaurant puts their own spin on things but I felt like most of the food here was bland. It seemed as though the chef was trying to conserve his limited supply of spices. We started out with the saganaki which was delicious. It was not flambed tableside with ouzo as I’ve enjoyed in some other restaurants, but I certainly can’t hold that against them. The spanakopita was good, but instead of being layered as it usually is prepared, it was more of a roll where all of the filling was wrapped with layers of phyllo. The phyllo was nice and crispy, but the filling lacked the depth of flavor that you’d expect. The house salad was unique and very tasty. The whole salad was finely shredded which I’ve not seen before. I ordered the pastitsio, my favorite Greek entre. The dish was bland and a bit dry. The bchamel formed a solid cap on top of the pasta. For dessert, we had baklava and ekmek kataifi. While not bad, they too were generally lacking in flavor.I’d like to think it was just someone in the kitchen being stingy with herbs and spices the night I was there and maybe it would be better next time. This is certainly not a restaurant that I’d refuse to try again, but reading similar comments in other reviews makes me think our meal might be the norm.

Great food and uncomfortable chairs. Recently ate at the Black Olive and the food was amazing! My wife is Greek therefore we eat Greek food at least once a week. The food was great! The chairs were really uncomfortable. I’m just saying this as a 6 foot man with chronic back pain. The chairs were small and my back hurt after we ate. But the food was good enough to overlook. Lastly, they do have some dual booth style table and chairs.

Good Greek food. I’m surprised to see such negative reviews on here. My boyfriend and I went to Black Olive last week after a movie, and were pleasantly surprised. Our server was very personable and offered us two glasses of wine on the house (we were not prepared for a BYOB on a whim). Standard bread and olive oil were presented. We ordered the spanakopita as an appetizer, and it was gooey and delicious. Next was the white bean soup — the only option for soup, but tasty. I tried the exohiko (on special) as my entree, and the lamb inside was moist and flavorful. They phyllo dough on both the spanakopita and exohico was perfectly flaky. I loved the roasted vegetables that accompanied my dish and I was so full and satisfied by the end of the meal. I can see how, on a busy night, it may get a little loud in there, but overall, I enjoyed the experience and would be interested in dining there again in the near future.

Poor food, poorly prepared, mediocre service. My partner had been there for lunch and enjoyed it. However, the dinner experience was close to a nightmare. The noise level was extremely loud, since the ceilings are high and have absolutely no soundproofing. The owners stood by the doorway and welcomed us; the bread served was warm and tasty, though the olive oil served with it had no taste whatsoever. From that point it was all downhill. My partner cannot eat raw onions, so inquired as to whether there were any. The server, who turned out to be barely adequate, said she would make sure she had none in her salad. Not only did the salad arrive with onion in it, but there was chopped scallion throughout. Then, we were barely half through our salads, when our entrees were thrown at us.The vegetables were so-so potatoes (that looked like they were pressure cooked in advance) and something resembling nearly-liquefied string beans. The taste made them inedible. My partner ordered leg of lamb. It was so overcooked and dry that it had very little taste and fell apart like meat that had been grossly overcooked in a slow cooker.Since I was unable to find any dish on the menu that included a major ingredient that I did not like, or was, medically, not permitted, I settled on a New York Strip steak. I will admit that it was rare, as I requested. However, not only did it have little taste – and not what you expect of steak – it was wet, top and bottom – and was lacking the crust of a properly prepared steak. As indicated, the server was barely adequate – severely lacking in training. As we parted the restaurant, one of the owners ignored us, while the other thanked us for coming, out the side of his mouth, as he continued to talk on his cell phone.All-in-all, this was one of our worst dining experiences. Needless to say, we will never return and will never recommend this establishment to anyone.
