So-so. Was going to go eat at TGI Friday’s ’cause we had a coupon when we realized we forgot to bring the coupon. In the same shopping complex was an On the Border, which I had never tried before. Being in the mood for Tex-Mex, we decided to try it. I was fairly unimpressed. We started out with the empanadas, which were overall disappointing. They were deep fried and the inside was over-cheesy and rather bland. Real empanadas are delicious and these were not worthy of the empanada name. Next we shared the fajita platter. We payed a dollar extra to get both guacamole and cheese, a dollar extra for extra sour cream (for my boyfriend), and a dollar extra to get a combo of steak and chicken. While the fajitas were as tasty as any others I’ve had at chain Tex Mex restaurants, the amount of food you got for the price was kinda disappointing. It’s not that I think restaurants should be serving huge portions all the time, but I don’t come to chain restaurants for great quality or authenticity. And while I think the amount of basic fajita filling they served was perfectly acceptable, it was the dollar extras that I had the most issue with. We payed $1 for guacamole and cheese, only to get about 1 tbsp of guac and about the same amount of shredded cheese. The extra sour cream was a little better, but still – they’re overcharging for what you get. On top of it all, you only get 3 tortillas. Which was not nearly enough. Especially since we were sharing. I should note, though, that I did like getting a choice between black beans and refried beans with the dish. That being said, I probably wouldn’t go back and I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
Good food. This restaurant has been there for long now and surprises you with consistency. The staff is equally good. i loved my chicken cliente tenders and the spinach dip was just awsome!
Border. Had jalapeno poppers with a great sauce, the tortilla chips and salsa they serve you in the beginning are tremendous and I had a lackluster platter of an assortment of stuff wrapped in diapers. It was greasy and i didnt like it much. My dining partner had a sizzling platter of beef and wrapped it in tortillas and seemed to love it. Great atmosphere and friendly efficient staff. I like the beer bottle chandeliers.
This is NOT Mexican food. We ordered the most basic items: a burrito (GROSS) and salad which somehow was inedible!? The dressing was so sweet it tasted like sugar water. This is not Mexican food. This is cafeteria food.
Nice lunch Chimichanga, best when ordered with the shredded beef. They will let you sub sliced avocados for the rice and beans. Good salsa, tasty queso bowl and the bar servers are friendly and keep you stocked with chips and multiple salsa cups. Make this a regular stop.
