Get the Gulf Oysters before they’re gone. When my husband heard that Pappadeaux was featuring Texas Gulf oysters for $9.99/dozen during happy hour for a limited time, he insisted on taking me there last Wednesday to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. One month earlier we sampled, on recommendation, the Blue Point oysters at Pappadeaux. As an ex-Californian I’m more accustomed to the oysters from the San Francisco Bay area, but I willingly admit those Blue Points were the best oysters Id ever had! They tasted like theyd just been harvested from the surf that morning, put on a plane and flown straight to ABQ where they were swallowed before they saw another moon. But it was the Texas Gulf Oysters that were on special, so my husband ordered us a dozen each — and we were treated to the same sea-to-table freshness. Each bakers dozen was served in a deep round tray on top of two layers of ice: cubed ice on the bottom topped with a layer of crushed ice, or snow. On top of the snow were several lemon wedges, and sunk within were containers of cocktail sauce, horseradish, and some sort of sauce with pickled vinegar (which I didnt care for in tandem with the fresh oyster, but hubby did). The fully loaded trays were preceded by a basket of hot bread with butter. Though seated at the bar, we were still afforded the heavy silverware wrapped in a linen napkin that other diners get at their tables. The only thing I need for those oysters, though, was a small cocktail forkwhich came stuck in one of the lemon wedges. The 2 or 3 oysters that were almost too-big-to-eat-in-one-bite still dissolved in my mouth like whipped butter. They werent salty like the Blue Points, either. When I was so full I couldnt eat one more, hubby ordered the Hot Boiled Shrimp, also on the happy hour menu ($8.95) . The shell-on shrimp were boiled Cajun style and served with a boiled red potato and small half ear of corn. Whatever was used to season the mound of good-sized shrimp is probably a secret, and should remain so. I managed to eat two of them, savoring the spicy mix of (guessing here), paprika, cayenne and bay. Messy, but delicious.I probably wouldnt even be writing this review if it werent for the need to rave about the great service. At one point, during the peak of happy hour, I counted no less than eight guys behind the bar: 3 bartenders, 2 bar backs, and 3 guys who did nothing but shuck oysters for almost an hour. The moment I wondered out loud where our server went, another bartender swopped in to ask what we needed. What I needed was my second glass of happy hour wine! After one glass of pretty decent Pinot Grigio, I asked for a taste of their house Chardonnay. When the sample arrived I took one sniff and set it down. Didnt even need even to take a sip to know that the Pinot Grigio was the only way to go with oysters. Before we left the restaurant I struck up a conversation with the guy sitting to my left. He had the nerve to ‘dis’ the place, telling me most of the food was way too salty. And yet, he also had the nerve to tell me, as he ordered a dirty Grey Goose martini (with olive juice and olives on a toothpick) that he ate there once a week. When his dozen oysters arrived I assumed they were the oysters featured during happy hour. Oh no, I never get the Gulf oysters. Theyre tough and rubbery. These are so much better.Really? We just had a dozen Gulf oysters each, and they were delicious.Seriously, you have to try one of these. Hubby still had enough room to slurp down one of bar buddy’s Blue Point oysters. The Gulf oysters were just as good, he insisted. Better even. Tender like these, but not so salty.Bar buddy then had the nerve to dis this incredible restaurant for being a chain. So? Id have paid double in So Cal (yes, even in a chain restaurant!) for this quality of seafood, together with the excellent service I received at Pappadeaux last week. The only thing missing was a view of the water. Get em while they last, people: Texas Gulf Coast oysters on the half shell, at Pappadeaux, for $9.99/dozen during happy hour Monday Thursday only. And while youre enjoying them, revel in one of the finest seafood restaurants Albuquerque has to offer. It may be a chain, but this chain knows how to do everything right.

I am not a big supporter of national chains but this one is one of my favorites. Always a great meal. Try the steak too ken of the best in the city.

Chain – but a good chain. I don’t like to frequent chain restaurants, but I have a monthly business meeting at this location. The service is always great, the food is pretty good and the space is unique. I would say that the best item is the seafood skewers or the ginger salmon. Don’t get too excited for high quality, but Pappadeaux is a solid option.

Great food and large portions. I’ve eaten at Pappadeaux in 4 cities and the food is always consistent and the service is good.

Tasty!. Unique fish and seafood dishes…cant go wrong with any seafood dish but stay away from the fried stuff…its just a waste of fresh seafood.

Yuck. Seafood is such a beautiful delicacy. Pappadeaux takes these light and delicious foods and batters them, drowns them in grease, and serves them with dirty rice. The way they treat seafood should be a crime. Eating there makes me feel heavy, greasy, and just plain awful. There are far better seafood places in town that showcase the true beauty and flavor of fish. Just do yourself a favor and try somewhere else.
