Down home Las Cruces food & atmosphere. Nothing fancy, just a pleasant view of downtown Las Cruces & home cooked style food. Burgers are always good as are the daily specials. The chicken breast Vera Cruz style was quite tasty. The flounder served on Wednesday & Friday melts in your mouth. Warm, friendly owners; good service. You’ll find the enjoyable feel of the real, long time resident Las Cruces here.

OFFERS A NICE VIEW OF THE CITY AND HAS FAIRLY GOOD FOOD.Romantic???? Hmmm. Not even close. Actually, the restaurant is pretty old-fashioned. Abraham’s certainly has its partisans around this town. They argue its merits as if it were one of Las Cruces’ real jewels. (Too bad it isn’t!) Why is that? Let’s see if we can figure out why.High up on the fourth floor of the Las Cruces skyscraper is Abraham’s restaurant. Abraham’s offers traditional comfort food like meatloaf, burgers, and traditional New Mexican offerings. In this clean and well lighted little restaurant there are numerous comfortable booths and a few not so comfortable tables. Hope that you get a booth. This is not really a very big place and it can get crowded at peak hours. The ambiance of course is enhanced by the nice views of the city. Rate the ambiance overall about a B or B minus…..NOT THRILLING. (And romantic??? Hmmmm.)The service is adequate to fairly good….rate it a C+ to a B depending on how busy they are. The quality of the food is good…sort of down home cooking…but IT IS NOT IN ANY WAY EXCEPTIONAL. Rate most of the dishes I’ve tried a B to B+. Their green chile cheeseburger is actually one of the better ones around. Rate it a B+. In October 2011 I stopped in on a Tuesday to sample their meatloaf special that customers rave about. The price for this meal was $6.95…..a super deal. I found the mashed potatoes to be a little sub-par. Now we all know that it is very difficult to get really good mashed potatoes in most restaurants, so I have learned not to expect this in most casual places I dine. These potatoes had some lumps in them (use the beater to whip them to a nicer consistency fellas!) and they were too soft…not desirable when they are holding gravy. A little more butter and salt would have given the mashed potatoes a better flavor. Still, they beat those made from a box. Rate those potatoes a B minus. The little dinner roll served with the meal was light, flakey, and buttery…with a nice flavor. The green beans were ok.The meatloaf itself was a nice portion. I found that the texture was about right…not too dry or hard yet it held together well. I did feel that they could have used a little bit more in the way of eggs and breadcrumbs as it seemed a bit too heavy on the ground beef. But otherwise it was very good. The onions and the spices used really came through. This was a nicely flavored serving of meatloaf. Was it the perfect meatloaf? Was it even a very good meatloaf? No! But it was quite tasty. Rate it about a B. Good but not approaching a high level. The gravy served with the meal was ok but it needed some tightening up with a little more butter and flour. It was too runny and the juices and the fat were not properly blended. When you can see the fat content of the gravy separating itself out on the plate…this is not desirable. Rate this gravy about a C+ or B minus. So why does Abraham’s have so many fans? Very reasonable prices, good (but not exceptional) down home style of cooking, a decent ambiance with nice views of the city, and pleasant service….if the place is not too busy. Rate the dining experience THREE-AND-A-HALF STARS…..meaning, a little bit above average. Abraham’s just does not quite make it to four stars in my judgment. I am not a real fan, but this is not a bad place to eat if downtown. Give it a try and see what you think.BOTTOM LINE: WILL I RETURN TO DINE HERE AFTER SEVERAL EVALUATION VISITS? I KIND OF DOUBT IT. A COUPLE TIMES IS ENOUGH!
