Cool ambiance but thats about it. Moved to Las Cruces about eight months ago and have been missing quality sushi ever since. I have given this place a couple of opportunities and have been disappointed both times. The atmosphere is really cool when you walk in. Sitting at the sushi bar is a nice experience but unfortunately the food is ehhh. I have only tried the rolls, so Im not familiar with the entire menu. The sushi seems to be consistent with other sushi places in town, large pieces (that make you almost gag) with too much rice and not a lot of substance. Any noticeable flavor is bland and unexciting. One thing not to get is the Volcano roll. From what I can tell it is just a heated up roll with sriracha drizzled on the top. Just plain gross. The prices are way too high at ~$35 for two rolls and a non-alcoholic drink. I will be saving my sushi binges for when I travel.

Overrated. My wife and I used to go to Aqua Reef about once a month but for the past 18 months or so our visits have been more infrequent. The service and sushi is not what it used to be and the prices are a bit high, in my opinion. We gave Aqua Reef many tries because it has sentimental value to us since our first date 3 years ago was at Aqua Reef. However, the last few times we have gone we have been disappointed. I lived in Japan for 6 years and became a sushi lover there. When I moved to Las Cruces a few years ago I tried every sushi restaurant in town. The atmosphere at Aqua Reef is very nice but there seems to be inconsistency in the food and service and part of that seems to be caused by a high turnover of personnel. Our last visit to Aqua Reef was about a week ago and the sushi rice was not prepared properly. I’m not trying to be picky – it’s just that the rice wouldn’t stick together so the rolls kept falling apart between my chopsticks before I could get the roll to my mouth. If it happened with one roll that would be one thing but it happened with each of the three rolls we ordered. The service was so so. It was very busy that night so I understand that but the hostess, who should have been filling in and helping the waitress, seemed to be overwhelmed.

Poorly made sushi. Last time I was there the sushi rolls were made up of pretty much all rice. The service was spotty and nothing special. My drink was empty most of my meal. The decor is pretty cool, but that can’t fix the food. There are quite a few more sushi places in Las Cruces that have opened up over the years which I’m excited about because Aqua Reef is sub par. I’d suggest Tokyo Sushi instead if you’re looking for some good sushi.

Best in Las Cruces, not perfect.. While this is not what you may be used to if you are from bigger cities, Aqua Reef is where my wife and I like to go. We have tried the other sushi places and they are a step below. This is the best Japanese style place we have here, so deal with it.
