Whether it will reopen somewhere else remains to be seen?????THE BEST BBQ IN LAS CRUCESBorderland BBQ is located in the back of the home of Alfonso Serna in Tortugas Pueblo not far from the southwest edge of the New Mexico State University. Here Al Serna set up his restaurant on the corner of Blackhawk and Renteria streets. The little restaurant is full of light, clean, and well managed. Inside there are about six tables and outside a little patio for dining. Step up to the counter and order your food from the board overhead. The food, if you don’t get it to go, is brought to your table on a tray with plastic forks and knives. All-in-all, this is a comfortable and friendly little place to dine. Al Serna and his staff are very personable people.Senor Serna set up his little restaurant after having years of experience on the national BBQ circuit and his cooking is a labor of love. The prices are most reasonable.I find his pork ribs to be excellent although on one occasion they were a bit fatty. The flavor from his seasoning rub and the smoke is outstanding. These are most likely the best ribs in town. The chicken plate is a half breast and the chicken is moist and tender and full of flavor. It was enough to feed the Chinese army. His house BBQ sauce is also tasty and has a bit of a tang. The brisket and pulled pork sandwiches are also very good.As far as the sides go, I found the spicy beans to be most tasty, the green chile mac-n-cheese to be fairly good, and the potato salad bland and quite ordinary.All-in-all, Al Serna is putting out SOME REALLY UPPER ECHELON BBQ. For overall quality his BBQ is definitely in the top two in town.WHAT TO EXPECT IF YOU GO: A nice, clean, friendly, quaint little place serving really good BBQ at a good price. I would encourage everyone, if you enjoy BBQ, to give this place a try. Check the hours before you go as they may not be open certain days or late in the evening.Restaurant rating = FOUR-AND-A-QUARTER STARS……meaning, very good regarding the overall dining experience. PS….in the fall of 2018 Al says on his web site that he has temporarily cut back on his hours as he is expanding his little restaurant……..will keep you informed when I get over there.
