REALLY GOOD FOOD…..SO, DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVEREl Jacalito is ranked number nine (9) out of over sixty Mexican food restaurants in the area. This is a nice little restaurant run by two brothers that I rate four-and-a-quarter stars for the overall dining experience. The bistro is clean and the service very friendly; usually the front of the house is managed by one of the owners himself. The menu is a combination of Mexican and New Mex cuisine with some American thrown in. The brothers put their own spin on many of the dishes. The prices are some of the best around.Their RED CHILE CON CARNE GORDITAS are among the best around (something not found too often in local restaurants). The CARNE ASADA TACOS are also among the best…..deliciously flavored. In December 2018 I sampled their CHILE RELLENO with green chile sauce…..it was really good. The batter was crisp and the relleno had a lot of cheese in it. The chile itself was firm and tasty. This was easily one of the better rellenos around town. Their chips are good and the salsa is high on the heat level. The al pastor is good and the bathed burritos likewise. El Jacalito also offers their own version of hamburgers which you can find nowhere else. They make some mean burgers.Seafood here is good also…..like the SHRIMP FAJITA PLATE. It does not have your typical fajita seasoning with its overdose of cumin. Shrimp ala Mexicana is also good.What to expect if you go: A clean, friendly, well managed little restaurant with about seven tables. (They do a good takeout business from their drive-up window.) A nice overall menu with great prices. And….. and….. very good food across the board. You need to give it a try. THIS IS CLEARLY ONE OUR BETTER MEXICAN FOOD RESTAURANTS.MEXICAN FOOD RATING = FIFTH or SIXTH BEST IN THE AREA……TOP 10% or better FOR FOOD.Restaurant rating = FOUR-AND-A-QUARTER STARS……meaning, very good for the total dining experience. Will I return to dine? Yes….I do regularly.
