NOT FOR EVERYONEThe Good Luck Cafe is sort of an anomaly……while the food isn’t bad the ambiance and atmosphere and parking lot really bring the rating down. While the food itself may be in the top twenty or so for Mexican food around here…..the total dining experience ranks this place way lower. This is not a place for everyone and many people will not feel comfortable dining here. Overall, the Good Luck Cafe ranks FORTY-FIFTH (45th) in the area among Mexican restaurants when considering the entire dining experience. The neighborhood customer base of this restaurant is heavily Hispanic and somewhat older than most. This is a very small cafe with about six or seven hard wood (uncomfortable) booths and around seven tables with metal frame chairs. When busy you will feel really crowded in there….and I mean really crowded. It is really noisy and hectic. Everyone is literally sitting inches from each other, so close in fact that the waitresses have difficulty walking between tables in places. During my most recent visit in late 2018 there was loud Mexican music playing and the waitresses were literally screaming to be heard. The place seemed generally clean but the floor was a bit messy. You seat yourself and the only table I could find was uncleared and near the restroom. A plant was hanging over my head. This is clearly not one of your nicer atmospheres for dining. If you decide to go try to hit them up at a time when they are not too busy. Also, the parking situation is a nightmare. I would never park in that lot. I park on the street behind the place and walk all of about thirty yards to the cafe. The service was ok….somewhat pleasant and I did get a follow-up. The menu is a bit limited….tacos, torta, burritos, and some seafood dishes….and of course menudo. This is mostly a traditional Mexican food restaurant. Prices are very reasonable as you would expect with a place serving traditional Mexican food to the neighborhood Hispanic/Mexican population. When you are finished eating you proceed to the front counter and pay the bill. The chips came in a little basket with two small cups of salsa. The chips were not very good. The salsa in each cup was not more than a SPOON FULL OR TWO. What’s with that??? Both were watery and not very tasty. Sub-par salsas. Today I sampled a BARBACOA BURRITO and a Green chile meat burrito. The barbacoa burrito I ordered with no beans and some onions in it. This was real cheek meat….not too greasy and not too dry. Very good, flavorful barbacoa. The green chile con carne burrito had some quite spicy green chile (very flavorful chile) and some diced potato. It too was good, but not great; the beef chunks seemed a little lacking in flavor. What to expect if you go: You may get lucky and find a parking space, but I would not park in there. You may get lucky and find a table available. THIS WILL NOT BE ONE OF YOUR MOST COMFORTABLE DINING EXPERIENCES. The ambiance is just too claustrophobic and hectic for me to find the experience pleasant. The service will be ok….sort of friendly and somewhat efficient. The menu is limited but the food is fairly good. But, not worth the negatives of dining here.MEXICAN FOOD RATING = PROBABLY AROUND TWENTY to TWENTY-FIVE OR SO IN THE AREA. The Mexican food quality just, maybe, makes it into the top third for Las Cruces.Restaurant rating = TWO-AND-THREE-QUARTER STARS……meaning, below average for the full dining experience. The service is average, the parking lot poor, the atmosphere noisy and hectic, the place makes you claustrophobic, and the menu lacks some of the better New Mex dishes. Best left to the neighborhood Mexican population. Will I return to dine? Maybe not. Three times may be enough..
