THE AMBIANCE AND ATMOSPHERE NEED SOME WORK AND THE FOOD QUALITY HAS DECLINED SINCE 2015J C Tortas on Picacho was a place I enjoyed four of five years ago but the food quality has declined as they’ve tried to keep prices down for the neighborhood customers……thus, sacrificing quality. This restaurant now ranks number FIFTY-FIVE among Las Cruces area Mexican food restaurants when considering the full dining experience. The restaurant is a bit nicer inside than you might expect from viewing the outside. It is ok for very casual dining….not a thrilling place to dine but ok. You order at a counter and they bring the food out to your table. The service is so-so. Most employees speak English as a second language. When I last dined at J C’s I was served water in a styrofoam cup from a jug sitting on the counter. The water had no ice and was at room temperature. This is not good….actually dangerous. I drank very little. Once my food was on the table I received no follow-up. I used to enjoy their number 22 torta …..La Mexicana. It is supposed to have ham, pork, and chorizo in it. While the tortas are monstrous I find the torta roll to not be the same quality I experienced several years ago. It was floury and dry and nothing like the photos. It could not be held by hand as it began to fall apart immediately. It contained pork, avocado, lettuce, some tomato, and the thinnest slice of ham. I could detect no chorizo. To tell the truth, this torta was sort of mediocre. A few years ago they were outstanding.I also sampled their BARBACOA BURRITO which came with a lot of shredded beef which had a nice flavor, but it was very dry. Yet, not a bad burrito for the money. What to expect if you go: A less than thrilling atmosphere, not exactly a warm place, so-so service, and food that is ok. Not great. Regulars might enjoy this place but if you are not known here you probably won’t.MEXICAN FOOD RATING……..FORTY OF SO FOR AROUND TOWN…….UPPER MIDDLE OF THE BOTTOM 50%.Restaurant rating = TWO-AND-A-HALF STARS…….meaning, well below average for the full dining experience. I don’t hang out here. Will I return to dine? I don’t think so.
SO GOOD!. JC Tortas was right on the money! We ordered the tacos asada. There was a ton of food on the plates… delicious… with efficient and friendly service. My son and I shared an order of 4 and it was more than enough. Loved the lemonade, too! I watched liquados being made and I’ll definitely order one of those next time we go in. Wonderful lunch spot!Support LOCAL businesses! Support bilingual businesses!
Tasted soo good, got me soo sick!. I was impressed for about an hour till I got sick. It tasted awesome and was really cheap. The other two people I ate with we fine however.
GREAT TORTAS. I don’t like the place itself either, but the tortas are GREAT. I have had tortas in Mexico and this is the closest you can get to eating an authentic torta without crossing the border. If you are looking for americanized mexican food this is not the place for you. Now if you are looking for real tortas without having to go to Nvo. Casas Grandes this is it!!!!!
I was not impressed with this place at all! The first experience is a menu that has no English. The girl working behind the counter does not speak English. It’s very hard to order anything if you are a non-speaking Spanish person. Once I got my food (I got the JC Torta) it was very bland without the addition of the red or green salsa they give you. Only good thing I have to say is there horchata is good. I would not recommend this place to friends.
