LA MORENA MEXICAN FOOD IS RANKED FORTY-EIGHTH (48TH) AMONG MEXICAN FOOD RESTAURANTS IN LAS CRUCES FOR THE OVERALL DINING EXPERIENCELa Morena is a small neighborhood place on Dona Ana Road with around five booths and a few tables. When I arrived there was one gentleman preparing food and a young lady handling the service. The young woman was very personable. The place is well lighted and clean and it is just fine for a quick casual meal, but not much more.La Morena has a very small menu….mostly tacos, tortas, and burritos….and not much more. The prices are very reasonable befitting a place serving a neighborhood Hispanic/Mexican clientele. Burritos cost around $3.50 and tortas around $5.00 (2018 prices).I ordered an adabada burrito and a carne asada torta. The torta came with little cups of red and green salsa. The red was quite spicy but it added a nice bit of flavor to the torta. The torta bun was fresh and held up well. There was some shreded lettuce and a bit of avocado in the sandwich, but nothing else. The carne asada had a nice flavor and I would order it again. This was a pretty good torta but not an outstanding torta.The adobada burrito on the other hand was not so good. The meat was tough and it lacked flavor. The refried beans didn’t help. I would not order this burrito again.What to expect if you go: A small neighborhood operation run by friendly folks but best left to the neighborhood crowd, a limited menu, very good prices, and food that is sometimes good and sometimes not so good. A mixed bag.MEXICAN FOOD RATING = NOT IN TOP TWENTY-FIVERestaurant rating = TWO-AND-A-HALF STARS…….meaning, below average for the total dining experience. Not really much to look forward to or go out of your way for.
