A CASUAL CAFE SERVING PEDESTRIAN NEW MEX FOODThis Los Compas on Bataan is ranked the thirtieth (30th) best Mexican food restaurant in the area. This unpretentious cafe is actually a little nicer inside than you might think upon driving by. It has about fifteen or twenty tables situated in two rooms. The restaurant is bright inside and it appears clean and well managed by the conscientious ladies who run it. It is perfectly fine for casual dining. You order at the counter from a large board overhead. The service is friendly and efficient. They bring the food out to your table. The menu is quintessential New Mex cuisine. Prices are very reasonable. But, the food is the same as you’ll find at all the Los Compas restaraunts…..sort of middle of the road at best. On my first visit I found the chips ok but the salsa, while high on the heat and with some flavor, was very, very watery. Not good. I ordered a chicken enchilada plate. The rice was pretty good and the refried beans just the usual. The shredded chicken had little flavor or seasoning. The green chile sauce was mediocre.I also sampled their red chile con carne smothered burrito. It contained some refried beans, potato and pork simmered in chile sauce. The pork flavor was ok but it did not have a robust flavor. This was an ok burrito but not outstanding. THIS SEEMS TO BE THE VERDICT ON ALL LOS COMPAS RESTAURANTS…..THE FOOD IS OK BUT NOT GREAT.One morning for breakfast I had their huevos rancheros with green chile. As often with Los Compas the chips were sub-par not being fresh. The salsa was low on flavor. The chile and the eggs had little seasoning. I had to add salt and black pepper to get any flavor. Overall, this was a mediocre performance. Not the stuff of legend. What to expect if you go: A decent enough casual place with friendly service, good prices, and New Mex food that is very average at best.MEXICAN FOOD RATING = AROUND THIRTY OR SO FOR THE AREA…..smack dab in the middle for Mexican food quality.Restaurant rating……THREE-AND-A-QUARTER STARS……meaning, very average….nothing too special for the dining experience. Nothing inspirational found here.

The Mexican food is decent and the menudo is their best dish. The horchata was a little watered down but the ambiance was comfortable and the staff was friendly. Their restrooms are safe and offer one stall per gender. There was no trash can in the restroom but this may have been a small oversight.

The food is greasy diner quality, the atmosphere matches its outskirts location, and cleanliness is not a priority. Only eat here if you’re desperate.
