ORDER AT THE COUNTER NEW MEX CUISINE, BUT THE FOOD IS PRETTY PEDESTRIANThe Los Compas restaurant on Nevarez St. is ranked number 24th in the area among Mexican restaurants for the total dining experience. It finds itself falling just into the top 50%.(As an aside: I have to laugh. When I examined the reviews for this place on Yelp for years 2018-2017 I found some outraged people posting one star reviews and some fans giving it five stars and telling the world how great it is. That’s the kind of crazy crap you find on the internet. Do you really think you can take these people seriously? Like they really have a clue?)This location I kind of like as it is clean, orderly, somewhat roomy, and comfortable. The ambiance overall is casual but fairly nice. And, it has a decent sized parking lot….although during its lunch hours it needs it. You step up to the counter and order from the big board overhead. The menu is almost exclusively New Mex cuisine. Prices are reasonable befitting a place that caters to a neighborhood Hispanic crowd. It doesn’t take long for them to prepare your food. When there I have been called to the counter to pick the food up myself and I have also had a woman bring it out to the table. The people working there are always friendly and efficient. The service…..nothing really to complain about despite the fools on Yelp.Regarding the food: On occasion I have had chips that were broken and stale. On other visits they were fine. The salsa generally has a lot of heat. Usually the CARNE ADOVADA IS GOOD with tender and juicy chunks of pork. Strange to say, they have been serving french fries with the adovada and I find the fries quite mediocre. I have had green chile meat burritos and green chile chimichangas at this Los Compas which had potato chunks but little meat. A lot of refried beans were in there……not good. The unpalatable refried beans overwhelmed any chile flavor. As with all the Los Compas restaurants in town, the food is usually fairly good….sort of middle of the road….but one would not say it is really upper level. If you see some crazy five star reviews on Yelp, well, consider what you’re dealing with there. What to expect if you go: I kind of like this restaurant but the food is just too uneven. Service is fine for casual dining and prices reasonable. The New Mex food will be sort of pedestrian.MEXICAN FOOD RATING = TWENTY-SECOND TO TWENTY-FOURTH BEST IN THE AREA…….it just makes it into the upper 50%Restaurant rating = THREE-AND-A-HALF STARS…….,meaning, a bit above average. Nothing great found here. Just an average version of Las Cruces area Mexican food.
Good food and great service!!! Our waitress was awesome and the food was delicious… it was our first time but certainly not our last. Our waitress even brought us sample of their tasty menudo… I definitely recommend this great restaurant…
Cookie cutter with too much spicy flavor masking nasty food
I`m in Las Cruces for work. I try other restaurants but keep coming back here. Very good food and friendly ppl. I can’t find this back home (DC).
The other reviews are prerry accurate. The exception being that you do come here for the Menudo and the Caldo de Res.
Spicy food, nice inside. The place doesn’t look like much from the outside, but it’s quite nice inside. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you, and we received ours pretty quick. In the meantime, there was chips and salsa, with a dark brownish green salsa that was pretty hot. The red chile was definitely happening, with some taters mixed in as a pleasant surprise, and the rice and beans were also first rate. My wife’s enchiladas were also excellent, she says. Definitely recommended.
