LITTLE BISTRO FEATURING MEXICAN SEAFOOD RUN BY GRANDMA AND GRANDPAMariscos Boca del Rio is an interesting place on Solano. I would rank this Mexican restaurant around THIRTY FIFTH place for the Las Cruces area when considering the full dining experience. It is run by an elderly couple who do most of the cooking and food prep with the help of some of their grandkids. During the several visits I’ve made the family has been very friendly….while grandma and grandpa cook the younger ones usually wait tables and assist customers. Grandma and grandpa speak mostly Spanish, but the youngsters are fluent in both English and Spanish and are most personable.Inside there is a counter and behind it an open kitchen. Several hard booths are in the front room by the kitchen and six or eight tables in a back room. This is not a thrilling place to dine and it is for the most casual dining only. The place is bright inside and appears fairly clean. Over the counter is a menu board and they do have menus if you are dining in. The service is pleasant and willing to please if not at the professional level. All-in-all, I kind of like the place and get a good vibe, but it may not be a place for everyone. When I’ve dined there the restaurant has usually had only one or two other customers present. They do offer giant shrimp cocktails, and a large variety of seafood. Carnitas, barbacoa, and asada tacos and tortas are also served. Prices are very reasonable. IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE MEXICAN SEAFOOD DISHES THIS IS A PLACE TO CHECK OUT.I ordered their SHRIMP DIABLO which was cooked in a sauce just a little bit sweet and a little bit spicy. This dish was very good. I had a CHORIZO BREAKFAST BURRITO that was sort of average. I once had their CHICKEN ENCHILADA PLATE which had shredded chicken, cheese, and a white gravy. The tortillas were not stacked or rolled, but folded over. These were above average enchiladas but not great ones. On my most recent visit in late 2018 I ordered their BARBACOA TORTA which came with fries. They did provide a basket of chips and some salsa. The salsa was ok but a little watery. The torta roll was large, light and tasty. It held up fairly well. The barbacoa was real cheek meat….prepared so it was not too greasy. It had good flavor, but I’ve had better. Good barbacoa but not great barbacoa. Inside the sandwich had shredded lettuce, mayo, onions, tomato, avocado, and cilantro. This was a pretty good torta. I’ll have to try the asada torta next. The fries had a crust of some kind and they were seasoned. These crispy fries were very good.MEXICAN FOOD RATING = SOMEWHERE AROUND TWENTY to TWENTY-FIVE……IN THE UPPER 50%. ….MAYBE UPPER THIRD. THE FOOD IS PRETTY GOODRestaurant rating = THREE-AND-A-QUARTER STARS…….meaning, for the total dining experience……sort of ok. But the food is pretty good. Will I return to dine? I probably will now and then.
