Southern New Mexico Style Cooking. My wife and I are from the Las Cruces area for many generations so we know this style of cooking. Nellies serves Southern New Mexican style food. As opposed to Northern Style New Mexican food as opposed to Mexican food as from a region of Mexico. There are many and great differences. The ingredients, the flavors, the preparation. In my opinion there is no comparison between Northern style and Southern NM styles. Southern NM style wins all the time. I have eaten northern style New Mexican food in several places in Albuquerque and Santa Fe and I have always been very disappointed to the point I refuse to eat this style anymore when I’m up north. Nellies is a great example of the style of cooking in southern NM. Their cooking is nearly the same as what I would cook and what others that grew up here would cook at home. So much so that on many occasions my wife and I decide to not cook and just go to Nellies. Go a little further south to El Paso and you get another style of cooking. It is all regional and Nellies is the best restaurant in Las Cruces for Southern New Mexican style cooking. If you have any kind of a palate you will taste the differences. Nellies is very consistent and in my opinion have increased the quality of their food over the years,which was good anyway, to the point like I said why cook at home. You will wait for a table even for those of us that have known Danny since he was a kid. If there is a list inside put your name on it and then check it once in a while.

Waited forty five minutes while three other families that came in after us got there food and we still didn’t get our two plates. So I couldn’t tell how good the food was because I never got to try it. Never going back.
The best Mexican food in Las Cruces. We have been going to Nellie’s for 24 years and love it. Their food is always delicious. I love their green chile banadas. My family always requests Nellie’s when they come to visit. The dining area is small and crowded so, if going for lunch, go early if you don’t want to wait. They close at 2 pm and no credit cards are accepted. You can call ahead for take-out orders. As I said above – the BEST I have found in the area.
Best ever!. Best ive tasted EVER! Grew up in Las Cruces and I still travel thousands of miles back to Nellies. Can’t be beat. It has spoilt me for eating elsewhere
It has been about 10 years since I was last in Las Cruces and enjoyed my first meal at Nellie’s. Today, I had their lunch combo relleno, taco, enchilada and carne asado with green chili sauce. My convictions have been confirmed; this place serves the best in the world green chili mexican food. Open one up in Tucson. See my photos.
