NEW MEXICAN FOOD RESTAURANT WITH UNEVEN PERFORMANCEPepe’s restaurant on Picacho is ranked the THIRTY-FIRST best Mexican food restaurant in town. In other words, it comes in around the top of the lower half.I have generally found the staff at Pepe’s to be friendly and somewhat efficient for a casual dining spot. The service is solid if not at the professional level. No complaints. The ambiance is ok. The restaurant is divided into two areas….one being a bit more secluded than the other. The floors are part wood and part covered with carpet. The restaurant appears to be clean and taken care of. The place is colorful but the cheap metal frame banquet chairs detract from the ambiance. The food served at Pepe’s is essentially New Mex cuisine with some more traditional Mexican. The chips are fairly good as is the salsa. I once ordered their CARNITAS PLATE. The pork chunks had some crispness as good carnitas should and they were flavorful. The meat however could have been more tender. The grilled onions and peppers made for a nice combination. However, the rest of the dish was forgettable. The refried beans were poor and the guacamole not so good.On another occasion I had a REALLY POOR CHILE CON CARNE BURRITO. It was actually one of the worst I’ve ever had. The potato inside was mushy from over par-boiling and the beef chunks had no flavor being mixed with horribly watery refried beans. The green chile went unnoticed among the goopy mess. There is a level of carelessness in this restaurant regarding the food preparation. Not sure how much professional pride is found here. What to expect if you go: A decent ambiance but perhaps a little dark, ok service in a casual sense, ok pricing, and New Mex food of inconsistent quality. Some dishes may be fairly good and others may be a disaster.MEXICAN FOOD RATING = AROUND THIRTY TO THIRTY-FIVE…..top of the bottom half.Restaurant rating = THREE STARS….PERHAPS THREE-AND-A-QUARTER….meaning, kind of mediocre. I don’t hang out here. Will I return to dine? Probably not. Four or five times was more than enough.

I believe in constructive criticism, I’ll start with the good, my rolled red encalida’s I think are tasty, the beans and rice quite tasty as well, sweet tea good, salsa is ok. For the not so good, chips are stale ( been in 3 times stale everytime). The service is ok not great but ok. I’m not sure how much you can ask out of a restaurant, but in las cruces Mexican is everywhere, you have to stand out in order to get noticed. Nothing spectacular here, I’ll be back one more time, if the chips are stale again I’ll never return.

The huevos rancheros are the worst I have had. They lacked presentation! The kids plates were mediocre. Avoid this place for breakfast!
