IN 2018…..NOT SURE WHAT TO MAKE OF THIS PLACE. IT IS VERY HARD TO EVALUATE.I have been dining off and on at Pho Saigon for a number of years now and I have long considered it the best Oriental restaurant in town. But, I am not sure what to make of this restaurant now as of 2018. Why? Because it has changed owners so many times. Every time I stop in the service and the food have changed. As of late 2018 some Yelpers are giving it five stars and some are ripping it and giving it one star. Both ratings…….as you would expect with most Yelp reviews…..are ridiculous. In atmosphere and ambiance it remains much the same; a clean, attractive, and pleasant place to dine. However, they never seem to have many customers when I’ve been there in recent years. The place seems to lack energy.Pho Saigon has never been known for its service and as of 2018 nothing has changed. There seems to be just one person waiting tables….and usually not in a professional way. While I have never experienced bad service at this restaurant, I have never thought the service to be what it should. On several visits the cook himself brought the meal out to my table. In 2018 the young woman waiting tables seemed to have a Middle Eastern or Mediterranean accent; she was certainly not Oriental. (I believe she may have been one of the new owners???) A cook appeared who was clearly not Oriental. The menu continues to emphasize Vietnamese dishes and Pho, but they have seriously cut back on their Chinese menu. With little Chinese food to be had I have a hard time getting back there regularly.During my most recent visit I ordered the number 49 combination meal featuring beef, pork, and chicken in fried rice. The egg, carrots, and onion were chopped so fine you could hardly see them let alone taste them. The fried rice was rather bland. I found myself adding a liberal dose of soy sauce and hot sauce at the table. All-in-all, this was an ok meal but not one I would order again.I have had meals in the past few years as their Saigon Dry Noodle Special with shrimp and pork which was ok and the Crispy Bird’s Nest which was very good as well as the Kung Pao Chicken which was also good. The Pho was ok. But….the cooks and owners have changed so many times over the past few years that I can’t feel confident in passing along information regarding the state of the food today. What to expect if you go: A clean and attractive dining area, a restaurant that lacks energy and has kind of a strange vibe, mostly Vietnamese food at reasonable prices, service that is just ok….they get the job done…..and…….sorry, I can’t say for sure how your food will be. It will probably be ok but maybe it won’t be great. Who knows???Restaurant rating = THREE-AND-THREE-QUARTER STARS……meaning, your dining experience will be above average. It is too bad as this place had so much potential that still remains unrealized.
This place is hit and miss as far as food quality goes. I’ve had some really great food here but have been disappointed just as much. Not sure if it’s a different chef in the kitchen or what but it’s notability inconsistent. My biggest complaint is the rude service we consistently get here. We haven’t been back in quite some time because of how rude our waitress was the last few times we’ve gone. I wish we could go here more often because I love Vietnamese cuisine!
