ONE OF THE BETTER DINING ESTABLISHMENTS IN LAS CRUCESThe Sunset Grill, set up high over the Sonoma Ranch Golf Course, offers a great view of the Las Cruces skyline as well as the golf course itself. The outdoor dining area is partially open and partially closed off about twenty feet off the ground. The interior of the restaurant is nice if a bit pretentious; not my style. Let’s just say that the decor will not be to everyone’s taste, but it is ok. Overall, this is a nice place to dine. The service I’ve always found to be good but perhaps not what it should be. They could up their game a tad with the service end of the business. The lunch prices are quite moderate and lunch is a good way to get acquainted with the Sunset Grill……stop in and check it out. Dinner prices, on the other hand, are high for this town. But, you must take into account the kind of food they are putting out. Most dishes are beautifully presented and the preparation is high quality. But can the food be considered outstanding? I would say that it doesn’t, generally, reach that level. It is good but not great.I had the TENDERLOIN BEEF TIPS sauteed in a cabernet sauvignon reduction served with mixed vegetables over and around mashed potatoes. The beef was very good but could have used more seasoning. The veggies were done well but there was a surfeit of zucchini. A good meal but not an outstanding one.The BEEF WELLINGTON was an enjoyable creation….tender cuts of flavorful beef cooked in a Madeira shallot sauce and served in a puffed pastry.I had the POLLO LOCO for lunch (around $12.00), a dish of penne pasta with diced chicken and tomatoes, chile, onions, and herbs in a white wine and herb and garlic butter sauce. A decent meal well worth the cost. All the desserts I’ve had here have been very good. What to expect if you go: A comfortable restaurant with some outstanding views over the golf course, a broad menu, modest lunch prices, fairly high dinner prices, fairly good service, and food that is generally above average and well prepared.Restaurant rating = FOUR-AND-A-HALF STARS…..meaning, you’ll have a very nice overall dining experience. This place is meant for either a casual meal or a special occasion.

Another bad time at the Grill. We live around the corner and we desperately want the Sunset Grill to excel, but they almost always fall short. Last Sunday breakfast was only the latest fail. We called ahead with reservations for 12. The table was ready but it took us 45 minutes to get our food, and one of us had to wait another 10 minutes for his. The food was average…there were orders that were wrong, the food was lukewarm, the prices are high. Not fine dining. To the server’s credit, she worked hard to keep us watered and coffeed, but the kitchen was a disaster in getting the orders out. I saw one other four-top leave after waiting for their food too long. Although the manager was around, he didn’t come and smooth any feathers, or maybe offer us a roll to keep the hounds at bay. I guess he thought this was normal.

Sunset Grill. This is a really good restaurant. We usually eat breakfast here but recently had dinner and it was excellent. It is a little pricey but the food and service is really good. Las Cruces does not have a lot of upscale restaurants so this one is nice to eat at for a change of pace from most of the local places. It is nice to go out and eat at a really nice restaurant once in a while, even though you do not have to dress up here.

Wow!. Well let me start off by saying we have been here in Las Cruces for almost a year and just discovered the best restaurant in this town! We did wait a little longer than usual but well worth the wait. My wife had the Sea Bass and I had the Ribeye, one of the best put together meals we have ever had. We have taken our friends that came in from out of town and they said they would kill to have this kind of food in San Antonio. Which says a lot considering that city is full of top of the line restaurants. Thanx for the great service, food and one of the best experiences we have ever had!

Bad Service at Sunset Grill. I waited for 20 minutes with no service, not even water. It is in a great place but they need to focus on basics like actually waiting on a customer. I walked out.

The best restaurant in Las cruces period. They have light up menus that feature the best tasting and highest quality of gourmet food I have had yet in Las cruces. Very hidden in developing Sonoma ranch community but a diamond in the rough. Outstanding wine list! Every time we go they have improved. Not to mention the best views in town. Thank you Sunset Grill!!

Amazing menu. From the steaks, pastas, and southwest dishes, to amazing seafood; it’s all awesome. We sat out on the patio, watched the sunset and ate some of the best crab cakes I’ve had outside of Maryland. To top it all off our service was excellent.
