IT’S RATHER ODD! I ACTUALLY LIKE THIS PLACE BUT I DON’T END UP THERE OFTEN???? WHY IS THAT????Josephina’s Old Gate is next to the Church of San Albino (east side) off the Mesilla Plaza. It is part of a pretty and charming bed and breakfast. There is also an interesting antique shop off to the side of Josephina’s bistro. For dining there is the attractive inside and the lovely outdoor courtyard area. THIS IS ONE OF THE PRETTIEST AND MOST CHARMING PLACES TO DINE IN LAS CRUCES. So, why do I not go more often?Well, several reasons: First, the menu is a bit narrow….mostly salads, wraps, croissants, and a few hot dishes. Second, you do not get a lot of food for the money. This is not comfort food. Third, the service at Josephina’s has long been an issue. Generally, it is not as poor as many make it out to be, but in my opinion it is not what it should be. DELAYS AND INEFFICIENCY ARE STANDARD AT JOSEPHINA’S. You can’t count on the service being satisfactory.The food is generally pretty good. I enjoy their BOWL OF PAPAS….potato, eggs, ham, cheese, and chile. Their fruit salad and chicken salad on a croissant are very good verging on excellent. Their potato salad is better than most and the REUBEN IS TOP DRAWER. The peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream is delicious. So, the food is good and if you don’t mind paying for a lovely courtyard, you’ll probably enjoy this place. For me, a few times have been enough. While I wouldn’t mind going over there again, I usually like to get more food for the buck and forgo the nice setting.What to expect if you go: A real pretty casual place to dine whether inside or out in the courtyard, service that may be ok but maybe it will not be, a limited menu, and food that is pretty good and usually very fresh. Prices???? I once shelled out over thirty dollars for a couple sandwiches, a small salad, a bit of potato salad, and a peach cobbler. This was a $20-22.00 meal at other places around town.Restaurant rating = between THREE-AND-THREE-QUARTER and FOUR STARS….above average to good for the overall dining experience (assuming your service this day was ok and you don’t feel ripped off on the bill.)

Wow guess this makes the third bad review in a row with similar circumstances… Order came out incomplete without so much as an apology. Told en to forget it and bring the check. Checkwas plopped down several min later my hanged arrived. Still no apology for lack of service etc. Normally a big tipper… Not this time. If you are looking for somewhere in the area pass on by.
Pass on the Old Gate Chardonnay. Ordered two glasses of wine and only received one glass. Sat at the table for 30 mn waiting on my husband’s wine that never came. So we asked for the check and left.
Beautiful and Charming Bistro. This is the most charming little bistro in the Las Cruces/Mesilla area. Enjoy good food in a relaxing atmosphere just off the plaza in Old Mesilla. Menu is limited. Service is good and very friendly. This place is exceptionally clean. The food itself I would rate a B to a B+. But the charm and ambiance make this a must stop! Mostly a place for breakfast or lunch, this is a great break from the usual Mexican food.
