It is New Years Eve 2017, my wifes birthday. To set her special day apart from the holidays we always try to do something special. This year we decided on brunch at Paisano Caf, a restaurant that has previously treated us quite well, although they seem to be short of servings of some items on the menu at every visit. The five of us were in a festive mood and enjoyed a round of mimosas as we waited for our brunch. Our waiter, and another server arrived each carrying two plates. My wife remained unserved. After no one appeared with her plate after several minutes I called him, who is engaged another table and seemed to be ignoring us, to ask when my wife would be served. He informed us that there had been a mix-up and they were now preparing her meal. I told that we wanted to eat together and requested that he clear our table and serve us when there were servings for all of us at the same time. He did not respond, but walked to the kitchen. About 20 minutes later, he reappeared with my wifes plate in hand. By this time the rest of us were sitting in front of plates of cold eggs. So much for a festive occasion. I do not enjoy cold eggs.

A VERY NICE RESTAURANT WITH THE MOST UNIQUE DISHES IN LAS CRUCESThe Paisano Cafe run by owner/manager Oscar Ibave holds a special place among Las Cruces dining establishments. First, they do not advertise much….thus, the number of customers is always manageable….the restaurant is rarely crowded. Second, their menu is the most unique in town. Third, the food quality is high, very creative and beautifully presented. Overall, this is a pleasant place to dine being very clean with an attractive decor and a nice patio alongside the back of the building facing the mountains. The menu is eclectic…..sort of Southwestern /Mexican/Italian and American. The prices are reasonable.I am always amazed when I see a review critical of the Paisano Cafe. Is it the perfect restaurant? No. But, I have dined here many times and never had an issue worth mentioning. The service may not be first class, but it is just fine. The food has always been very good to excellent. In the past I’ve ordered their CHICKEN TUSCANO…..chicken strips in a creamy white sauce over pasta. The pasta was cooked al dente and the portions were large. The dish was good but not outstanding. I also experienced their COCONUT SHRIMP….large shrimp cooked in a light, flakey batter with a sweet Jamaican flower sauce over them. They were delicious. The cinnamon rice that came with the meal was delicious as well. (I might add that I have never been served fresh bread with my meal here, something I miss.) I have also had their GRILLED VEGETABLE LASAGNA. The presentation was beautiful. Covered with a creamy white sauce with a hint of parmesan cheese were tomatoes, yellow squash, mushrooms, sliced carrots, green peppers, grilled onions, zucchini and more between those pasta layers. Laying across the top was asparagus. This was one delicious meal. YOU CAN SEE WHY I SAY THAT THE DISHES SERVED HERE ARE SOME OF THE MOST UNIQUE ABOUT TOWN.Paisano Cafe is also one of the two places that I know of where you can get CHILES EN NOGADA. Inside two large poblano peppers is a uniquely flavored ground beef (minced very fine), some dried fruit, pecans, and raisins. Over the top is a cold walnut and goat cheese sweet wine sauce with pomegranate seeds. This is an outstanding dish.I have also had empanadas with a delicious dipping sauce and their ENMOLADAS stuffed with shredded chicken and covered with their MANCHA MANTELES MOLE SAUCE were really good. You can’t find food like this anywhere else around Las Cruces. Good stuff. What to expect if you go: A nice, but sort of basic ambiance….nothing fancy. Good but not really top level service…..fine for a semi-casual cafe. The most unique and creative food in town, beautifully presented and prepared at a high level.Restaurant rating = FOUR-AND-A-HALF STARS……meaning you’ll have a very good overall dining experience. And, to the few fools on the internet who complain about Paisano Cafe…..you folks need a little introspection.
