A BEAUTIFUL, CASUAL CAFE IN THE FRONT AREA OF THE DOUBLE EAGLEPeppers on the Plaza is a beautiful yet casual cafe in the front area of the Double Eagle restaurant in Mesilla. The fountain and all the hanging plants and palms make for a lovely setting for lunch or a casual dinner. I find the chairs a bit uncomfortable but the ambiance is top notch. The service approaches the professional level and, although it is by no means perfect, it is generally quite good. The menu is somewhat downscale from the Double Eagle dining room itself but it does have a nice variety with things like chimichangas to salmon wraps to burgers. I find their Mexican food to be ok but not anything too special. Their burgers and onion rings are very good. On some visits, however, I have experienced a degree of neglect in the kitchen as when I had a burger bun soaked in oil when it was grilled. The lettuce on the burger was limp and not fresh. The green chile they placed across the burger was also limp and flavorless. But, perhaps this was an abberation????On another occasion I had their Plato Mexicano which came with a basket of chips and a pretty good salsa. The brisket taco was fairly tasty as was the relleno. Nothing great but not bad. The enchiladas were pedestrian.I also had their Center Cut Top Sirloin which was very tender and cooked to a perfect medium-rare. The flavor of the steak was ok but could have been better. The Key Lime Pie was good and the Raspberry Sorbet was very good. What to expect if you go: A beautiful dining area, good service, modest pricing, and overall good (but not exceptional) food. The food has its ups and downs.Restaurant rating = FOUR STARS…..meaning, the total dining experience will be good. This is a real nice place for lunch. Will I return to dine? Yes.

Wonderful atmosphere for lunch!. It’s like you’re dining inside a greenhouse! Lots of bright light, lots of live plants and trees, and the pleasant sound of the huge water fountain! The furniture is rustic Mexican style, brightly painted wood. I met my friend there for lunch and we shared the biggest green chile cheeseburger in the world (the menu says so)! It sure was huge and very tasty, and we had them add bacon! We also got the onion rings which were very yummy! The beer was good (and cold)! The Double Eagle restaurant is a very old large house, with two bars, ballroom with balcony, old paintings, all sorts of dining rooms stemming out from the house’s centrally-located atrium. The atrium is the Pepper’s Caf, so it’s a restaurant inside of a restaurant! Such old history here, I love this place! Check out my photos!

Afternoon Delightful. We had a great visit to Peppers / Double Eagle bar one afternoon in Mesilla. Our bartender Jo fixed us up with delicious seafood chile rellenos, margaritas, and green chile-infused vodka. We enjoyed the halloween-themed decorations and music. Jo gave us some great tips on things to see and do on our trip… Thanks again, Jo!
