New High Prices, Same Bad Food. This was a favorite for friends and I to meet at, and the cheap prices were the main draw. The food was not-so-great typical diner/greasy spoon, but it wasn’t horrible. Within the space of a few months recently, we watched the prices shoot up at least twice, and with that, the food quality seemed to drop a few notches. We might as well meet at Denny’s now, since the prices are the same and the quality higher. The service isn’t as good as when we started coming, either. I don’t know why, we’ve always been good tippers and good customers and we started getting attitudes for no reason. What once was a favorite, friendly hangout is now just another run-down, over-priced crap joint on Central Ave.
Hits the spot. Come to Mannies early–by about noon the home fries are a bit lackluster. But the coffee’s always hot (and delicious), the eggs are always cooked how you want them, and the price is always right!
Indifferent. Greasy spoon diner at its core but nothing remarkable here at Mannies. I have a friend who swears by Mannies Huevos Rancheros so I decided to take a stroll to try it for myself. The service was fast and friendly but the chile was more like really runny green and red chile stew. I couldnt really distinguish between the red or the green except for the colors but they tasted exactly the same. I dont really feel an urge to return or recommend this place now or in the future.
Below Mediocre Dinner. Decided to try this diner for dinner last night. I was greatly disappointed in the meal we were sered. We ordered green chile cheese fries for an appitizer. They came in a paper boat on top of a plate. (Thank heavens). The steak fries were drowning in what looked like green chile soup. It was a complete soggy disgusting mess. We sent those back and waited for our entrees. When we got our entrees I was again disappointed. Everything on the plate was bland. My pork chops didn’t have any seasoning on them whatsoever. The mashed potatoes I was served were so thick and dense, they must have been sitting in a heated pan for a long time before reaching me. I knew what kind of place we were eating at so I was not expecting amazing things, but sometimes you can just tell that absolutely no one cared about what they put on our plates. There was no pride in the food they were serving us. It was just a very sad meal to eat.Service and staff were great, but in the end, we were there for the food and unfortunately, it was awful!!!
There’s something in my water???. I love Mannies, and their daily specials are wonderful, but when they bring you water, don’t be surprised to find a fly or two in them. It has happened to me several times, and it is because they keep a whole bunch of cups with Ice at each station, that are there all day so anything can get into them! At least the coffee cups are kept underneath the station, turned over, so they don’t get things in them. solution: don’t have cups of ice that are not covered on each station. I know its a pain in the arse when it is busy, but either put an automatic ice machine at each station, or have the waitress/waiters get the ice from behind the counter. I don’t want to have to fish things out of my water!
Great breakfast. Every time I come, I get the Pileup on Girard, which is basically huevos rancheros with hash browns. The staff is always good, the coffee is actually pretty good for this kind of place, the food is hot and plentiful, and the price is right. This ain’t nouveau cuisine; they fry stuff. If you want diner food, I think this is a better value than the Frontier.
Friday night specials. Arriving after 8 pm happily not crowded for a Friday night – service was excellent. We each opted for the special for $7.95 – their green chile cheeseburger plus a bowl of green chile chicken soup, a drink and fries! Really nice UNM student waited on us and substituted extra tomatoes for fries and the cook wrapped the burger in lettuce leaves. A relaxed sort of comfort food place to bring kids – pluses are wifi and easy parking lot. Close to UNM.
