The Mine Shaft Tavern is a pleasant place to spend an evening, it often has great music and a fun crowd. I must say, however, their food is just not good. I have been here quite a few times and have never had a good meal. It is hard to imagine how someone can ruin grilled onions and mushrooms, but they manage to do it. I am not a drinker, so my option of 12 oz can of soda for $2.50 is also a disappointment. I will continue to visit the Mine Shaft Tavern to listen to some great bands, but I will eat before I go and just find something to drink to carry me through the evening.
A pleasant surprise. From the outside the place looks like it might collapse at any minute – but then every place else in Madrid has the same look. The tavern has probably not changed since the 1940s, and the Stanleys are on the sound system. The staff is friendly and the kitchen is efficient. We had the fried artichokes and they were delicious. My green chile cheeseburger was enormous, juicy, and cooked exactly to order. Fries were golden and crispy. A bonus was a crisp battered and deep fried green chile. Wagyu steak salad was tender and cooked exactly to order. The house margaritas were good and reasonably priced. Only strong warning – DON’T DRINK THE WATER! It tastes like mine tailings. Much better food than expected and a fun place to visit.
Went there on a Friday, right around 1pm. We were greeted and seated promptly. The hostess was friendly. The waitress was very good and also friendly. She was very attentive without hovering. We each had the green chile cheeseburger, it was very good and cooked properly. The bun was very good. The only disappointment was the green chile didnt have much bite, but it had good flavor. They can’t really control the heat level of the chile though. The bar is very nice and the place was clean. The only warning I would give is that it was a mining town and the water has a strong sulphur odor and taste, they have a sign recommending bottled water if you want to have water. We had iced tea and although it did alter the taste somewhat, it was acceptable. We would definitely eat there again.
This place was fun. My friend and I stopped by in the middle of the day and were treated to some awesome dub reggae blaring through the speakers as soon as we walked in. There were a bunch of bikers seated at the bar, mixed with tourists like us interspersed throughout the restaurant. I got a really good veggie burger salad and my friend got nachos. The waiter was a cool local kid who chatted with us about Madrid and some of the upcoming stuff at The Mine Shaft.
Sometimes they’ll kick the dogs off the dancefloor, but it’s all good.15 May, 2009An institution. Go on live music nights. Bring your dog.
