My boyfriend took me here for dinner before a show at Sheas. I was hesitant at first because we’ve only been there for drinks and I didn’t know how the food would be. But it turned out to be amazing! We got the best seat in the house – on the balcony over looking the bar and we were able to watch all the action of the mixologist. Buffalo Proper is all around unique. Amazing service, food, cocktails – everything has such detail and they don’t miss a step. We got the bread (forgetting the name of it but it was awesome), the fennel and beet salad and the hanger steak cooked medium rare. Everything came out very fast and beautifully plated. Again -such detail. Our steak was cooked perfectly, no fatty pieces that would go to waste. And the service was top knot as well – the general manger, our server Joelle and the mixologist (John I believe his name is) were all verh personable and took the time to talk to you. No one was in a rush and everyone was in a really great mood. Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be back again. But, people should be open to trying new things if they are going to Buffalo Proper- it isn’t your typical Applebee’s American food. Be open to new styles and seasonings and you will really enjoy your experience. We will most definitely be back again!
I’m On the Fence, But . . .Thumbs-Down.. I recently took my wife, son, and daughter-in-law to Buffalo Proper, which despite its new name looked much the same as its previous manifestation. I wanted to try the place because so many people gave it high marks for innovative food and cocktails. We did not spend any time in the bar, but were promptly seated at a table looking down on the crowd there. Despite background chatter, talk was easy.I had read about the Old Fashioned they serve, and since it is a favorite of mine tried one. It was tasty but somewhat meager and too sweet, as was the Brooklyn my son ordered (in all fairness he did like it, however). My daughter-in-law’s Pimps Cup was quite good. Drinks were ten dollars each — a fair price, given the establishment — and an IPA I had with dinner was fine and well worth the six dollars it cost. Note that I skipped a second Old Fashioned.Once we had resolved the small plate/big plate debate — something new to me, and akin to the diplomacy I have often experienced in Chinese restaurants — we ordered and were served reasonably promptly. And, the food was generally quite good. The Mac & Cheese ($12) was the favorite small plate, and the large plate Braised Beef ($28) was excellent and also a favorite. I would have difficulty recommending the half chicken ($32), however, because even though it was good, it is overpriced (I mean, I could understand a pheasant or a Dodo, but sixty-four dollars for a chicken?). The Panisse ($7) was rather tasteless, I thought. Food was hot and sufficient, if not plentiful. We passed on dessert. The bill — which included other food items and second drinks — came to $180, and with tip the total was $35.Now, given what I have written about the food, one might think I could give this restaurant a favorable review, and I admit that I am on the fence about it . . . but, the clincher is that I probably won’t return. Explanation follows. There are two problems that this restaurant has, the first of which involves the building in which it is located: it operates on three floors, and the staff has to trample up and down stairs to serve food and remove dishware, the traffic creating a less-than-relaxing ambiance. The place could really use a dumbwaiter. Furthermore, the men’s room has room for one person at a time, forcing men to stand uncomfortably in line waiting for a vacancy. (I can’t comment on the ladies room.) Second, the staff are omnipresent, and far more attentive than they really need to be. It seemed that any time one of our group took a sip of water, someone rushed in with a pitcher to top off the glass! By the way, I have absolutely no complaints about the waiter who served us, who was as attentive as I wanted him to be and had a welcome and friendly exchange with us.In closing, I do have to say that my comments may reflect a generational bias: I like classic cocktails to be just that, and not syrupy, and don’t need the hassle of choosing between small and large plates. Having said that, my 40ish son and daughter-in-law would probably give Buffalo Proper a more favorable review, a thumbs-up. But, they are not sitting at this keyboard, and regrettably, this 60+ year old fossil has to give Buffalo Proper a thumbs-down.
A+ for atmosphere and cocktails, but seems like they’re trying way too hard…flavor doesn’t deliver. Let me preface this review by saying that I really wanted this meal to be good. I love Monkfish, its one of my favorite seafood dishes to eat. We had been to Buf Proper before for cocktails, never for dinner. We arrive, atmosphere is great, love the industrial chic meets arts and crafts decor. Our server is very pleasant. We order some beer, all is going well. Now time to order food. This is where things start going downhill. We split the Mac Daddy appetizer – consists of elbow pasta, swiss and cheddar with a duck confit. Sounds tasty, lets do that. I order the Monkfish. Boyfriend orders the beer braised beef…which is paired with a vanilla parsnip puree. We think, OK lets be adventurous. Maybe they made that vanilla work somehow.Mac Daddy comes out. Served in a very tiny cast iron skillet. Not gooey mac and cheese as expected, but crispy and slightly overdone/chewy. Duck had good flavor, but there wasn’t a lot of it. Alright, definitely not worth $12…but lets see how the entrees go.Beef comes out, square chunk in center of plate with some crushed peanuts on top and a few crowns of broccoli. Vanilla parsnip puree on either side, typical brown jus in bottom of plate. Vanilla parsnip puree was a total bust. Tasted exactly like whipped cream.. Super sweet vanilla vegetable does not pair well with beef, as it turns out. Not sure what chef was thinking?Sadly, my monkfish was really nothing special. No sauce, had some plain blue lentils and a mix of very black tar looking mushrooms with red wine. Flavors did not mesh. Super pungent and oily shrooms, not a good tongue feel. Again, really thought they were trying too hard.Bill came out to about $120 after tip. Very disappointed. Probably won’t go there for food ever again. There are plenty of other places in Buffalo that I would prefer to eat at, especially for a bill of over $100.
Proper Review. Thank you Ed, Jon and Kristen for a wonderful experience and meal. The cocktails and food were not only delicious but innovative and creative. Kristen was one of the best servers I’ve ever had. Besides giving food suggestions she was engaging and passionate and made the night very enjoyable. Plates are large enough and meant to be shared and we had no problem eating every bite. Make sure you frequent Buffalo Proper because their menu is constantly changing with the seasons and the product available from the local farms. You can definitely taste the freshness of the meat and vegetables used. Could have eaten another brussel sprout dish by myself. Burgers offered on Tuesdays and will have to try one next time. The cocktails are also constantly changing but if you remember a drink you previously had that isn’t currently featured they can whip it up for you. I can’t wait to return for another girls night and to try the late menu!
When you have such a wonderful location with such a rich decor, it’s only fitting that you have a amazing, creative menu. This is a foodie heaven. Even the simplest of dishes are twisted with such creativity that you are just in awe. And service? Service was what you would want from a restaurant of this caliber. Very knowledgable and helpful. From knowing their menu to knowing their wines, they were perfect. We ordered almost everything on the menu, and nothing disappointed. Mussels so clean and so tasty. The charred cauliflower with just a suttle hint of vanilla, amazing. Fried brussel sprouts, pork belly, Pinot noir poached egg and potatoe, duck confit mac and cheese, a delicious mix of French cheeses, all so perfectly prepared. I can’t say enough, as a food lover I can truely appreciate and I’m truely excited at the direction that this restaurant and the other restaurants in buffalo are heading.
Worse Moscow Mule in Town. Buffalo Proper is suppose to be known for their high end drinks: so at $10 a cocktail one would expect a decent drink! I ordered a variation of a Moscow Mule ( vodka, ginger beer & lime) and could not believe my eyes when I saw the (super friendly) bartender pull a huge 3 liter of GOYA Ginger ale soda in lieu of Ginger Beer from behind the bar! This was truly the most low class jug I’ve ever seen at a bar. For $10 Black Sheep puts BP to shame as they make their own Ginger Beer and at least other bars like Blue Monk etc, use bottled alcoholic ginger beer. NO one should be able to lug a green plastic jug of GOYA soda from behind the bar and call them selves upscale. We will definitely not be back! Read less
Amazing meal. Terrific atmosphere. Small plates give you a chance to try different things. Attentive service and local craft beers. Buffalo Proper elevates dining in Buffalo. We’ll be back!
