After having read some of the complaints, especially about the dreadful service among other things, I felt some of these people were there on my first trip to the place recently. It took a half hour to get a Pepsi (we were the only party there!) and one of my party nearly had to get his meal to go it took so long as he had to go to work, a few blocks away! I had been told/read just how great this place was and I simply do not understand those who praise it. I will not go into detail, but I have been to around 10 such places that offer this cuisine in my travels and this place was a distant 10th based on food! So disappointed. Oh and the credit card machine was allegedly down.
Very chilly inside and dingy. Cook and waiter were the same person. We ordered then sat there with nothing not even our drinks for 45 minutes. We had to ask for our drinks again when the food finally arrived. The veggie combo was good but the lamb dish my son got was terrible. A few pieces of lamb, very smalk, with tons of unappealing bread. Many better Ethiopian restaurants than this one.
I have been wanting to go to an Ethiopian restaurant for a while now. I had heard that the Ethiopian cuisine was the best in Buffalo at Lucy. I had also heard that the service was slow. Some folks get hung up on ambiance. Some of my best meals came in places that didn’t look great from the outside or inside. In some cases my experience says that just because a place looks great doesn’t necessarily make the food any better. This restaurant doesn’t look like much from the outside or inside.Upon arriving for lunch there was a table of 8 a table of 3, and a table of 2 already seated. After a 10 minute wait my daughter ordered the shiro stew and I ordered the doro wot one for me and one to take home for my wife. Five minutes after that the waitress said that the kitchen couldn’t make either dish. We had gotten there about an hour and a half after they opened. So I ordered the doro tibs one for me and 1 for my wife and my daughter ordered the vegetable soup and sambusa and we crossed our fingers. Luckily they were able to make the doro tibs for me but they couldn’t make the vegetable soup. My daughter said that the appetizer that she ordered the sambusa was the best thing she ever ate. My doro tibs were most excellent with just enough kick of heat. I have never tasted the injera bread before and it has an interesting texture and a good taste. The injera is used to eat the food as you get no utensils which was fine. Everything tasted so good and fresh. The food gets a 4.5The service needs attention. The kitchen should communicate with the waitstaff what is unavailable so no time is wasted there. The couple that was there before us left without getting their food because they waited over an hour. It took our order 55 minutes to arrive after first entering. As some folks have said take-out may be a better option. To their bad luck their credit card machine was down today so I ran over to the grocery store across the street to get cash from the ATM.The food here is really good and I could see them getting organized and getting bigger and better. Sadly I am worried that maybe they’ll scare enough people away never to return (and tell all their friends) that they will go out of business. Having customers leave empty handed and still hungry is no way to survive in the foodie heaven that is the Buffalo NY area. The service gets a 2-2.5Best of luck Lucy! I will be back and I will make sure I have time.
Just had our first meal at Lucy’s. It was delicious, beautifully presented and every item made fresh. Owner is personable and willing to teach about the dishes prepared. Was a wonderful change from the norm. We will definitely go again!
Lucys’ Ethiopian. This was my first time eating at Lucys. I have been wanting to go for a while and glad I did. I ordered the Veggie Combo, which had 5 vegetarian dishes atop a large crepe style bread. The food was great! The lentils highly spiced and the Chai tea very sweet. My friend ordered the Fish salad. We both left full and happy and our pocketbooks hardly took a hit. Highly recommend!
Decent Food, Terrible Service. My friend and I wanted to try ethiopian cuisine for the first time and Lucy’s is the place to go in Buffalo for that. I ordered the kitfo and my friend had the shiro stew, both were very good. The tea I got was heavenly, however the service was so awful we will never go back. It took our server twenty minutes to bring me a container for my leftovers. If you go to Lucy’s order take-out, it’s probably a safer bet and not quite so aggravating.
A little hidden treasure. I am addicted to Lucys coffee… its to die for and so cheap! The service is lovely. I met that owner the first day I was there and we conversed a little bit, ever since then he asks me how school is and such everytime I come in. Also if your a Buff state student the coffee is $1.25 compared to $1.50! Awesome coffee and awesome food!
