2016/12/01Final night in the Albany area, and someone at the client office had suggested Barnsider, which was close to the hotel. It is a fairly large restaurant with several dining rooms. The decor of the restaurant definitely aligns with the name: the ceilings a lofted like you are inside a barn, and the wall paneling looks like barn board; a very rustic feel in an urban location. It looked like there were a couple of company holiday parties going on, and the restaurant was moderately busy, but my colleague and I were promptly seated. The menu featured the typical American suspects: steak, salads, pasta, seafood and more. All the entrees came with the salad bar and a side. I chose the Crab Stuffed Haddock (haddock fillet topped with crabmeat stuffing, lightly seasoned bread crumbs and hollandaise sauce). My main dish had a nice balance of crisp from the bread crumbs and soft from the flakey fish and crab. The hollandaise had a pleasant tang. My side of steamed vegetables were a bit overdone. I noticed that the servers were ladling the vegetables from a large crock pot on the counter beside the kitchen, which explained the lack of freshness. The service was very good. It was very much a team approach. While we did have a primary server, there were several people who looked after us. All of them were friendly and courteous.

My wife and I eat here occasionally, although I’m not sure why we don’t go more often. The food is always excellent and the service is the best. I had seafood this time, which is the first time because the beef is outstanding. Having said that the stuffed haddock was exceptional.
